I think it can change the schools for the better.

At the base school, my kid and others got to rise to the top when the AAP kids left.


What about those GE students who attend base schools which happen to be centers? There's no room for those kids to "rise to the top" when they're outnumbered by AAP kids.

Our experience is exactly the same - our base school is the center. Your description of it being an "an artificial construct" is right on the money. Nearly half the kids (3-6) are in AAP. It's really become such a joke. Lake Wobegon, VA.


Half the 3-6 graders are in AAP? You center school only has students from the base school? Our center school has students from 6 other schools.


Of course our center draws plenty of other students from other schools (five at last count). But about 2/3 of the second graders for whom this is their base school, wind up in AAP in 3rd grade. Why so incredulous? It's one of the huge problem centers, in that it's dominated by mainstream AAP kids.

My child is very smart but not truly gifted and I freely admit it. She was accepted into the AAP program through appeal and is doing great in third grade. The simple fact of the matter is that she coasted through her first three years of school. I can't blame the teachers in gen Ed As they have to focus the majority of their time and attention on the kids who are behind or on grade level which in my child's case meant she got reading instruction maybe twice a month. If schools were able to differentiate their instruction better or if kids were grouped in classes by abort you wouldn't see parents like me pushing for AAP instruction.

I bet most those saying "shrink AAP, just improve gen ed" live in McLean etc. Those of us in the crappier pyramids need this. Our gen ed is all SOLs all the time and is never going to be anything but.

Is that what the thread is about? Nine pages in and I don't think the OP's post has been fully explored or addressed. However, the utter lack of self-awareness on display is entertaining, even if I do pity the children of many of the posters.

I am the OP. This thread was to determine the demographic and get the input of those posters who are saying that "AAP is not a gifted program."


I will clarify the questions just to get the thread on track.

1. Do you consider FCPS AAP to be a gifted program? Please answer- Yes or No.

2. Are you the parents of the kids with really high IQs? Please answer- Yes or No.

3. If your are a parent of a child with a really high IQ, what is your child not getting in the current AAP program? (For example, a much more advanced curriculum, a more creative method of instruction, a better cohort, a smaller class size etc.

4. What do you think your child should be getting in a gifted program? Would be great to see some actionable items here

Maybe teach And I'd really like to get rid of travel soccer in our area, because the talented Soccer. Kids just dominate our ES and my DS can't keep up. Oh well, that's not going to happen either, I guess

There are parts of the county that need Centers because there are only a handful of Center eligible kids at the base school.

I think that many, many people buy in center boundaries specifically for AAP, which creates a large number of kids zoned for the center qualifying for AAP.

I know that we tried to buy a house in bounds for a specific center because we were confident one child would qualify, uncertain about the next and certain that the third would not and we wanted all tue kids in the same school. I know of many other people who bought in zone to a center for very similar reasons. I also know of many people who pirchased in bounds for the center because they hoped or assumed their kids would qualify (some did, some didn't) and still others who bought in zone for a center based off the higher test scores of the center.

Your kid can't keep up academically, with some of his classmates (is e in the bottom half!!) and you think the solution is to create a school with less academic rigor and lowered expectations, where no one out performs your child academically? I guess if your child was tone deaf, band and strings should go? And no art, because snowflake can't draw? Guess what, your kid doesn't get to be the best at everything. W

I'll play, because I can tell that the AAP stalker poster is trying to hijack another thread with his issues with the partiCular AAP Center that his GE child attends.

1. Yes-- to the extent it does a better job with gifted kids than Gen Ed does
2. Yes (DC 1) and No (DC 2)-- but both are in AAP Centers
3-4. I'd love a smaller class size-- but I think all FCPS parents would-- AAP and GE. For DC 1, I want a faster paced curriculum that really challenges him, with much higher academic standards. Right now, it feels like he spends minimal time on homework, and is phoning in the work he does, but still getting high As. I would love his teachers to give him assignments that make him dig deeper, think more critically and put a lot more mental effort in. I would also love it if the teachers' standards for As were higher, and if the work was more cross disciplinary / interdisciplinary. I would like to see him have assignments that he really had to struggle to complete at an A level once in a while. DC2 is a good match for AAP as it currently is. Getting good grades, but having to put forth reasonable effort.
