I have an acquaintance who went from what seriously looked like almost 500 pounds - now she is down to what looks like 200. She is a big boned gal and God bless her for losing ALL of that weight. I commend her from going from what was surely a heart attack in the making - she says is she did it via diet an exercise. That amount of weight loss? She MUST have had surgery. I don't believe the "diet and exercise" but I am happy for her for extending her life. She seriously used to keep M&M's (loads of them) all over the place in her apartment - in weird places - under sinks in her bathroom, etc. I hope she keeps up her success!

I also hope she becomes a nicer person.

I wish the same for you. She has proven herself capable of change.

OP, thank you so much for starting this thread, and for all of your responses. You have saved me the trouble of doing it myself, because honestly I could have written pretty much every single thing you did. I have fewer children but that's about it. Similar history, same amount of weight to lose, my DH loves me the way I am, but I feel disgusting about myself. I read all this stuff about the emotional reasons for eating too much, but for me I really think it's just because food tastes SO GOOD. Like you, my life is full of obligations and taking care of other people, and eating something yummy is a way to have some amount of pleasure for myself. Of course, what I'm really doing is hurting myself, I know. But it's the same reason why I procrastinate on my work obligations, put off home projects that I know will make me happy, etc. It's just HARD to do things that are hard.

But you are inspiring to me. I'm going to try, for real, maybe not today but soon. I've only been promising myself that for 3 years...

Same for you. Maybe you can just say nice things without including the BUT. Regardless how she did it, she did it. God bless her.

OP, it sounds like you don't really like fruits or many vegetables. I think there may be something to this. What do you feed your kids? Is everyone in your home eating more or less the same food? In addition to taking care of yourself, your children will learn habits from you.

You may be eating more because if you are filling up on nutrient-poor foods, your body may tell you to eat more to make up for the shortfall. If your diet is poor, your intestinal flora may not be what they need to be in order to increase nutrient absorption, continuing the cycle. I really think you need to go cold turkey on the sugar/sweeteners/white starches. Replace them with something else - instead of a coke, a plain seltzer water with a squeeze of lemon. No diet foods. Quinoa pasta instead of wheat pasta, or better yet, just quinoa. Brown rice. Instead of cereal or processed breakfast "foods", steel cut oatmeal with a pat of butter and wild blueberries. Fruit smoothies.

Find some foods you like that are flavorful and nutritious. Keep trying! If you have been eating the same way your whole life (picky) then it will be hard. Don't be afraid to use butter and dressings in moderation in order to increase your overall veggie consumption (stay away from bottled dressings, they tend to be loaded with hydrogenated oils and added sugars.)
Nuts.
Eggs.
I would say fish, but nice fish that doesn't come from a yucky farm and/or loaded with mercury is pretty expensive these days, but if you can afford it, go for it.
Sprouted whole grain products - very filling, and good for digestion.
Meats in moderation.
Unsweetened coconut products.
Nothing fried.

You may find that you do all of these things and not lose weight, but you'll be healthier and at least you'll have a handle on knowing whether the extra weight was due to the processed foods in your diet or your body just really, really wants to hold on to those pounds.

People are different. My SIL has struggled with this for years. She actually eats very well - a varied diet including lots of nutrient-rich foods. She has always been "overweight" but she has gorgeous skin and hair and looks really healthy, and energetic. She just doesn't have an "off" switch.

Me, on the other hand.... if I start eating lots of crap, I do gain weight, mostly around my middle; and get bloated a lot too. But before I've gained a lot, my skin starts to break out and my energy levels crash. This manifests itself long before I actually appear overweight.

I'd be careful about exercising, too. I have some friends who get hungrier than ever after their aerobic workouts and running, and end up treating themselves to something sweet because they "deserve" it after their hard work. Running while overweight can also put a lot of stress on the joints. Resistance training or moderate swimming might be better.

Hi OP - So, I just recently lost about 30 lbs. Am 5'5" and went from about 175lb at my very highest to - right now - 140 lbs. I would like to lose another 5-10lbs, but I have a pretty muscular build so anything under 135 lb is pretty low for me. For reference (b/c every person's body holds weight differently), I am a size 6.

I lost the weight all in about 5 months. I had gotten pretty fed up with myself (I've had 3 kids and was never able to lose the baby weight after my first). But it required a lot of sacrifice. I gave up all sugar and carbs (I now give myself some treats, but I was pretty strict about it for the first 4 months; now I'm strict about it 85% of the time). I also started SERIOUSLY working out. High intensity workouts for at least 45-60 minutes six times/week.

So, it worked but it was hard. I had to make the decision that I'd rather be hungry than overweight. I wasn't ready to make that decision for YEARS, but I decided I needed to do this for myself now b/c it was only going to get harder once I turn 40 (next year).

Anyways, good luck to you. It can be done, but usually not without a decent amount of sacrifice.

Saw the movie Fed Up last night.... wow, very scary and so interesting about how bad, bad, bad all the processed crap we consume is!

Though the scariest part was about the fast food companies' stranglehold on the school lunch programs in the US. OMG, I had no idea!

Bc I just ate cookie dough... sigh

OP here
I was really doing well since I first posted and have been tracking my WW pts and today, I really just wanted cookie dough. So I made some and ate it. I prob had 2-3 cookies worth and I put the rest in the freezer. I had some sushi for lunch (tuna, salmon and rice) but I will try to eat a light dinner .

I feel so pathetic when I simply cant control myself.

I'm at the 175 pound mark. I just can't seem to resolve to give up carbs and alcohol. I hope I get your level of commitment soon. I need to be about 145 pounds.

OP, no one gets fat because they ate 2 or 3 cookies on occasion. So buck up, don't get depressed, be proud of how well you've done. and perhaps think about how you were feeling when you made the dough (tired? stressed? lonely? bored?) and strategies in the future for dealing with this kind of feeling and what you will do. I am not someone who swears off all sugar all the time because I know it will backfire. Instead, I decide ahead of time when I am going to have something delicious--likeif I know I'm going to dinner. That makes it easier for me to eat well in advance and resist temptation.
