The Heights School

We know two families with sons who attend, and they rave about the school. But we have also spoken to others who say it reeks of elitism. Would a boy coming from a middle class family fit in there?

We know many families there. All absolutely love it. Appx half of those that we know come from modest means and make sacrifices to send their boys there. It was extremely competitive to get in this year - FYI. Start early.

Thank you so much.
That’s helpful info., as we decide if we should apply. We plan to visit first, but it helps to hear from other parents.

How many kids come from VA/DC versus MD?
The two families we know (NOVA) love it, but the elitist comments from others at our school concerned me.

We also know of two families who did not get in this year. One was waitlisted for the lower school. The other was applying for upper school.
My son is currently a first grader, so we would start the process next year for third grade.

Thanks for your response.

There are definitely better options. Try GDS.

The Heights is not known as being woke. Thankfully.

As in, would he be allowed? Probably. Would you want to? I can’t imagine why you would.

It’s woke to accept gay people and treat them respectfully now? Sheesh

Gay is woke? Does the school just pretend gay people don't exist or what?

They probably just aren’t welcome. You can count the number of Black kids at the school also. I did see one who I think was African.

Are you standing outside the school with binoculars as if you’re on safari? Weirdo.

I've been curious: What is the summer camp like?

It looks like it has awesome activities for boys that would be right up my son's alley.

But we're not currently-practicing Catholics and we'd rather not expose our son to religiously-driven toxic masculinity. (I assume that by this point he'd be capable of laughing at it, but that laughter would probably seem disrespectful.)

Please don’t prejudge this school based on your biases. The school has a podcast, HeightsCast, that talks about its philosophy. Listen to a few episodes and decide for yourself whether it promotes “toxic masculinity.” Half (most??) of the DCUM commentators on this subject are projecting their hatred on the right onto this school.

Is non religiously driven toxic masculinity okay?

Seriously though, it’s Opus Dei. Look it up and decide for yourself. I liked it, but my kid didn’t get in.

the camp is great, but don't do it, there are plenty of other good camps to choose from. you seem like you have issue(s) and probably would find things not to like about the people there.
