That’s plain silly. You think 100% of families should get their first choice? Sorry but children that have behavioral issues or learning disabilities are part of the Beauvoir population and they won’t get in to some schools. Beauvoir is too indirect in giving parents feedback about kids who behave like little monsters. The admissions process can be a reality check. When a game of spitting during an admissions visit resulted in STA rejecting the boys involved, some families were shocked that 8 and 9 year old boys were expected to behave during an admissions visit. |
Agreed. In recent years families have learned of behavioral issues and/or learning disabilities only through the outplacement process. How is it that a school to which you've only applied can know more about your kid than their current school? Or is the current school too cowardly to say so? I think the latter, and it's another 'Mrs V is too interested in everyone loving her' issue. Even the Interim Head last year started changing this, thank goodness. Parents are now being told of behavioral issues or having testing recommended when needed. |
This perspective is so out of touch to me. 10-12 kids out of 85 not getting in where they wanted is not a bad thing. Those are amazing results and no school in the area has results even comparable to these. You don't have to be a Beauvoir family to realize that. |
Agree as well. The outplacement rate is the fault of the school rather than a reflection of the ability of a child. 100 percent of the families do enter Beauvoir thinking/expecting that they'll get their first choice upon departure. Also, apart from McLean, there is no suggestion of learning disabilities in the ultimate destinations, so I'm not sure that argument holds up. The next destinations aren't "learning disability" schools. In some cases, they are simply back ups of back ups of Beauvoir. Thus, they aren't places that those entering Beauvoir would expect as an outcome.
The school failed those families by not better preparing them for realistic choices. 12 families should not have to settle for second choice after attending Beauvoir. |
Why not? There's no reason that students shouldn't apply to a school that might be a bit of a "reach" given their test scores. (Furthermore, since a large part of the testing is the internal admissions part, there's no way to know in advance how your kid is going to perform on some of those tests.) If 100% of students start getting their first choice, it means that the outplacement department is doing students a disservice by discouraging students from applying anywhere that isn't a guarantee/safety. |
This thread probably should not have been resurrected and is widely off-topic from its original subject.
