I’m a teacher. I want holidays, too. And no, I don’t get paid time off in the summer.

+1 these parents are nuts. It’s all about what’s best for them and their work schedule and no thought whatsoever as to what teachers need. I hope Reid continues to offer 4 day weeks. It really helps.

I highly doubt you are a teacher. Teachers absolutely need more work days, but I don't know a single one that thought this year's calendar was helpful.

From what I've heard, elementary school teachers didn't like it. At the secondary level though, my colleagues and I largely loved it.

+1 I’m the PP who said I hope we continue 4 day weeks. I’m not a troll. It’s funny how the second someone disagrees with them, they are called a troll. I’m the parent of a high schooler. We loved the days off. My child got extra sleep and was able to keep up and not have to spend every waking weekend working to stay afloat.

So you are more or less advocating for year round school?

NP here. I am advocating for year-round school! But I hate the random days off. Let's keep it simple with 2 week breaks after every quarter. That gives us about an 8-9 week summer.

We'll be moving internationally soon. I peeked at the current calendar at the private school there and theres only a handful of holidays the whole year, maybe 4 total. So most weeks are 5 days a week. No early releases. Then there's a 2 week fall break. 2 week winter break, 1 week break in end of Feb and 2 weeks spring break. They go mid August to early June. Looks like a nice schedule to me!

I LOVED the calendar this year.

I have HS students. One is AP and other is very VERY high needs special eduation. It was great for both of them.

Having "random" days off was perfect. Was able to schedule appts for my speical needs child easily and my AP child got plenty of breaks.

I filled it out in support of keeping all the holidays.

Lots of HS families liked the calendar this year. I know its not everyone's preference, but many did like it and their voices can be heard from this survey.

Anonymous wrote:Here is the long term problem: next school year’s calendar isn’t too bad. We start August 24 and get out June 16. That’s about a whole week shorter than this school year. The thing is they kept all the random religious holidays and the full two week winter break, but it just so happens that the religious holidays fall on more favorable days of the week. Either weekends or Monday or Friday to create a nice three day weekend.

Rosh Hashanah is a Saturday
Yom Kippur is a Monday
Diwali is a Sunday
Lunar New Year is a Saturday
Eid Al Adha is a Monday
Only Eid al Fitr is mid week next school year, on a Wednesday

The 27-28 calendar is similarly favorable, with Yom Kippur on the same day as Indigenous Peoples Day, Diwali being tacked on to the end of the 1st quarter, and most other religious holidays on weekends. We do lose an extra 2 days in 27-28 for presidential primary voting the first Tuesday in March and they decided to tack on a teacher work day the Monday before.

But when all of these holidays fall mid week and aren’t being doubled as teacher work/school planning days is when we start to have a calendar that drags on and on with little continuity. They seem unwilling to do something like use the religious and cultural days as TW/SP days and then reducing the TW/SP days at the end of the quarters from 2 down to 1. Or even going back on some of the religious observances from days off to O days.

Why is everyone getting worked up then? The calendar for the next two years seems to keep everyone happy - religious holidays are observed and there are more 5 day weeks.

People need to find better things to get upset about.

Many of the ES families who are up in arms about the calendar this year will be happy in three years when THEY have the extra days off when their kids are in HS.

High Schoolers are only 30% of the school population.

And hopefully the algorithm did not send surveys to parents of high school seniors. Anecdotally, it did not send to rising kindergarten families. I’m sure that was just an oversight.

+1 same for us. We were able to get dr appointments and dentist appointments in on those random days off. Kids actually missed less school because of it.

That does not sound like a 180-day calendar for students.

Why not? 4 nine-week quarters, 7 weeks of break during the school year, and a 9 week summer. We would need a few extra holidays here in FCPS (Labor Day, Memorial Day, 3 days at Thanksgiving) so we would end up needing to get rid of the Feb break or move to an 8 week summer.

I counted and it was 176. This location won't have snow day cancellations, so there's that.

I am a parent of high schoolers and I think people like you are absolutely lazy. If your kids can't keep up, then try signing them up for less. We don't need 4 day school just because your snowflake needs sleep!!!!

I could care less what you think! We looked forward to the days off and extra sleep and it was bliss! My child still had a great year educationally and learned the same amount. I hope they do not change the calendar. So many people I know were grateful for the extra sleep (especially middle school families). It was truly a gift.

Absolutely not true. You must live in a very privileged and lazy bubble.

Random days off are awful. No one, not even my kids want them. What they want is to be on summer break NOW!!
