Many lots are cleared and they could let the child care providers decide if they could open in those cases but MCPS doesn't care

This. Super frustrating for parents who need daycare to force KAH (and other providers) to close down.

You do understand that one reason the schools continue to be closed is that the lots have not been plowed, right? It’s not snow at this point. It’s solid ice that weighs as much as concrete.

Childcare staff and parents would be in the way of the people trying to clear the lots. I can’t get off my street yet, so it’s likely others (childcare providers) are in a similar situation. It is what it is.

Plows work fine. MCPS plowed the school lot and sidewalks today.

None of the downcounty schools in my area are cleared. They prioritized the meal distribution school sites, which makes sense.

It is what it is. I approve the decision from a safety standpoint, but I really wish there was virtual learning for high schoolers: AP exams are in May and the College Board doesn't care how many days schools were closed.

So those schools can't open child care but others could, preventing parents from losing income and workplaces people like you and me rely on from being short staffed. But MCPS doesn't care

MCPS cares, but less about your work than about the childcare workers who need to commute. I've never had to use MCPS childcare, so I'm just guessing here. Most people are still digging out their driveways, so I think this debate is moot.

I don't like how every time something doesn't go your way, or every time you think there's blood in the water, you start critizing MCPS, and others start critizing "Bethesda". The reflexive "bash the rich" or "bash the establishment" is puerile.

If you've never used MCPS hosted childcare maybe you should shut up about how it works, because you don't know. Those of who have, know it would be possible to open.

I accept that critique. It's fair. But I still don't think the knee-jerk criticism of everything MCPS does it warranted here.

It's not knee jerk, it's based on actual experiences of the policy before the recent changes and how school based childcare worked. There's no way you'd know that, because you're running your mouth about stuff you don't have any experience with.

+1

I don't know why some people here are just addicted to posting here about things they don't know anything about and on top of that being condescending and dismissive about it. Learn to stfu please people

Take your own advice.

Right, I know it is more comfortable for you if other people don't speak out about their needs or normalize being a working mom. It makes you look like a complete ahole when it becomes apparent you just hate women who don't stay home or are wealthy enough to hire a nanny.

I am a woman. I have multiple children. I work full-time. I do not have a nanny, an au pair or any kind of individual childcare.

I’m just not a whiner. For some weird reason, that bothers you. OK.

So you come to dcum to whine about whiners? Lol

There are many school lots that have not been plowed yet.

There was on stuck on our street.

PPs trying to pretend none of the schools are plowed so no child care for anybody makes sense. But many schools are plowed and could open for child care but MCPS leadership really hates working parents.

I’m nervous about my high school kids losing a week before APs since they are already really far behind. Wish those teachers could email out the assignments so kids could get ahead. It’s going to be brutal when they get back.

I agree that MCPS teachers should send out homework at least. Seems like they have been instructed not to do any work though.

Do you think we're idiots? The schools with unplowed lots should not be open and of course would not be open if MCPS lifted the "all childcare must stay closed" bam. Likewise, the childcare programs who don't have enough staff who can safely travel to work at them should not and would not be open. No one is asking for any of that. We are just saying that the programs at schools where the lots *are*, clear and staff *can* get to work should be allowed to open, at least on Thursday.

(And to be clear, our school is one of the ones that's unplowed so ours would be closed regardless and that's fine! But I don't want other working parents to struggle just because I am. And I want to go back to the days where MCPS at least pretended to trust their on-site providers to make their own decisions, and to care about the working parents and child care workers who lose out when they don't.)

+1 we've explained all this many times but some folks here have their own narrative they want to promote so they can have a free day off work

They don’t seem to care about salaried workers at the childcare programs either.

Anonymous wrote:I wish teachers email out homework packets as optional to let parents decide for their kids to do at home. My two ES kids are at home bugging me and screaming while I work from home. The only thing to shut them down is unlimited screentime and one kid do not take screentime (not sure if it is blessing) keep bugging me. Our school childcare is out. Any suggestions what to do with them the next 2 days at least?

1. Read
2. Write a journal entry about the perfect snow day or about what you read
3. Write up some math problems for your kids to solve. Have them explain to you how they solved each problem
4. Solve a math problem and have your kid tell you weather you solved it correctly or not. If it’s wrong…they need to teach the correct method

It depends on age but it’s not hard to google activities.

That’s lovely if you are a stay at home parent or someone who can work from home. My office is open tomorrow, so there’s not going to be anyone teaching math.

Maybe you could take your day off and learn the difference between whether and weather…

Working and using them are different things. I can't tell you why MCPS hasn't bothered to clear the snow.

I mean, I can: incompetent leadership.

Yes, everyone is aware parents are stressed. The ice, unfortunately, remains unmoved.

Every PA, NP, nurse, and health tech needs to call out tomorrow and Thursday. Let's see how many surgeries can get cancelled before the MoCo elite start expecting more from MCPS.
