I'm from Canada originally, and midi is a term that is used, but i was into sewing clothes as a teen in the 90s and maybe i'm just remembering that term being used in clothesmaking circles - like in mccalls pattern books and by my mom (who also grew up sewing).

But it is technically a word in the US too --- i know because i have been doing the NYT crossword for 30 years and MIDI MINI and MAXI show up in crosswords all the time in response to the clue "Skirt length".

Regardless of the coopting of the term in recent years, when i think of lengths, i think:

- MIDI is just above or below the knee
- MINI is above Midi
- MAXI is floor length
- Tea length is mid calf

People seem to be using Midi today to describe what is actually tea length. Probably because "tea length" doesn't sound very contemporary.

Also, much of what shows up on models on clothing websites, ie where a dress is described as midi on the seller webpage, usually shows up as floor length on typical height women. And likewise what is described as mini on a model hitting midthigh is going to hit just above the knee on most women.

Like I'm too live and let live to have ever actually commented on her clothes, but I can't imagine someone less qualified to be a fashion critic.

So that's who I think of when I see the comments on this website. I have no idea if it's lack of self awareness or insecurity, but I don't think the people angrily criticizing every trend and making fun of other women for wearing clothes they like and feel good in is always particularly chic or polished. Which is why I'd never take the criticism of weirdos on this site seriously. Many of them are probably at home wearing weirdly clashing, too tight clothes, thinking they know something we don't.

You have just described the most egregious offender on this forum, the self-appointed “fashion critic” who writes long screeds on the Trump women thread. She is absolutely always right (in her mind) about every fashion choice and she will grossly overreact to even the slightest thing she considers an infraction. And if anyone dares to disagree with her, watch out. She doesn’t accept dissent.

I am often on that thread and I don’t know who you are talking about. It’s mostly a silly thread with the exception of Ushabot.

Anyone who has visited that thread knows exactly who the PP is talking about.

I have been a faithful reader of that thread since day 1, and I have no idea who PP is talking about. Over the years, there have been many different folks posting, and lots of different viewpoints expressed. Some are quite knowledeable in explaining why something looks good or doesn't. Sometimes it's silly, sometimes its snarky, sometimes its outright hilarious or insightful -- in all, I think it's been the gift that keeps on giving.
