Interesting ... my mom was an immigrant, and she used the word "midi," too. Maybe it was a London 1960s thing?
I'm from Canada originally, and midi is a term that is used, but i was into sewing clothes as a teen in the 90s and maybe i'm just remembering that term being used in clothesmaking circles - like in mccalls pattern books and by my mom (who also grew up sewing). But it is technically a word in the US too --- i know because i have been doing the NYT crossword for 30 years and MIDI MINI and MAXI show up in crosswords all the time in response to the clue "Skirt length". Regardless of the coopting of the term in recent years, when i think of lengths, i think: - MIDI is just above or below the knee - MINI is above Midi - MAXI is floor length - Tea length is mid calf People seem to be using Midi today to describe what is actually tea length. Probably because "tea length" doesn't sound very contemporary. Also, much of what shows up on models on clothing websites, ie where a dress is described as midi on the seller webpage, usually shows up as floor length on typical height women. And likewise what is described as mini on a model hitting midthigh is going to hit just above the knee on most women.
