FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

They first need to decide what the base school boundaries will be. Sounds to me l8ke they 0lan for it to be tiny.

I fall into the group that thinks that they are going to limit it to McNair, Coates, and Oak Hill and that they are doing this to prevent too many kids being moved from South Lakes to the new school. This keeps the Floris kids at South Lakes at South Lakes and the Fox Mill kids at South Lakes. Crossfield parents seem to be fine with their kids attending Oakton and are less willing to move to the new school.

Herndon HS and South lakes HS have enough FARMs kids that I am sure the argument will be that a vocational program would be used by kids from those schools, which are close by, and hence it is worthwhile. It might even siphon off some of the FARMs kids. I am not sold that FARMs kids parents are involved enough to be aware of academies and the like that this is going to be useful for anyone. And if that is the population they are trying to hit, there is enough space at Herndon HS, which is not that far from Dulles to put the program there.

Every parent that I've spoken to in my neighborhood, both with elementary, middle, and hs aged students at Oakton, would love for their kid to attend the new school instead of Oakton, myself included. We are in a Crossfield neighborhood.

I think it will include Floris kids that go to Westfield. (Floris kids are split between Westfield and South Lakes after Carson.)
But, after reading Board Docs I'm not sure.
It sounds like they don't intend to have many base kids.

questions I would have:
How many students from base area? This should be the first question.
Will they have sports opportunities? Theater? Etc for extracurriculars. It sounds like the focus was primarily on the Academy.

FCPS needs to put first things first. This sounds like someone's pipe dream to have a "vision of the possibilities."

Here is a hint to our School Board. Let's take care of the basics first. Solve the overcrowding and long bus rides.

You may have corporate sponsors now--but for how long? Then what?

And, honestly, this Aviation academy, if viable, sounds like a much better fit for Westfield--where they have the space.

I just cannot see brining in other kids for an academy where you don't have room for the base population.

Chantilly has a large academy. It is well regarded, but it does take space from the general education needs. Has that been part of the issue there?

I thought South Lakes is only 30% FARMs. That's below the average. That said, this proposed aviation program will likely draw students from across demographics. It may very help with FARMs levels at neighboring schools. FCPS is still figuring out what this program will be. We'll all know soon.

Every parent that I've spoken to in my neighborhood, both with elementary, middle, and hs aged students at Oakton, would love for their kid to attend the new school instead of Oakton, myself included. We are in a Crossfield neighborhood.

That bus ride has to be much worse now than it was years ago.

Question: I've heard that McDaniel lives in Franklin Farm. Is he a Crossfield/Oakton parent?

Not sure. We live less than 10 minutes from the Carson/KAA campus, and it's nuts that they would put a HS there and not include the neighborhoods where kids currently have a 40 minute bus ride to Oakton

I agree that Kyle is super shady, and I think it’s outrageous that they spent zero time discussing the school purchase when they voted on it, but objectively there is merit in offering academies that might be outside of the traditional school model. There are some good paying jobs to be had in aviation, and this could also feed nicely into a military career.

You should have a look at the mess Prince William is with all of their different specialty schools.

And the chance for rigging the sports teams!

Now substitute Herndon for KAA and Langley for Oakton, and see if people agree it’s “nuts.” Sometimes longer commutes are necessary, and sometimes they are even desired.

Just looked at the docs for today's meeting. Lots of reading materials from Brookings. Does McElveen still work for Brookings?

Lots of information on preparing for the future.

Here is a novel idea for our Fairfax County School Board:

Before we plan for the future in space, how about we prepare our students for the present we have? Seems to me that is the need here.

Jfc, not everything is about Langley. Take that to a different thread.

Yes. There is a lot of cross-campus recruiting that goes on. I was really surprised because my son plays a sport and people were advocating for him to move schools.

The Education committee of the Fairfax Federation is meeting with Reid next month. They have a meeting at Gatehouse prior to that (at least I think that is what it says.)

Wait they want to make it another GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL? Would it be just part of the school, like some of the other academic year governor's schools, or are they really recommending we create a second TJ that takes the entire building??

It's an endeavor to avoid base school boundary changes. Elephant in the room is open capacity at Herndon HS. Similar to what MacKay called open capacity at Mount Vernon prior to the BOS approving the West Potomac expansion for a bond referendum. Surf the Fed of Citizens association site for names, look up addresses where possible, FCPS committee or BRAC membership. Eastern FX has Edison Global STEM [ how did it end up there and not Lewis?] so there's not a comp product in the western part of the county. https://edisonhs.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/inline-files/GSCP%20FAQs%2011.2022_0.pdf

3 years full time, 90/grade, transfer, no transportation, senior year transfer reg or apply for IB. That letter is NOT about a 60 [2 classrooms] or 90 [3 classrooms] program co-existing with the base school POS.

There are people who want to go to the new school (Fox Mills people from South Lake) or their school frees up space (Centreville/Chantilly indirect adjustment) , there are people who don't want to move to this new school (Xfield people from Oakton to new HS) or don't want to move into space freed up from this school (Langley to Herndon for space freed up). But nobody actually say what they want, all they say is this is boondoggle, and that is corruption, and SB are bad/ugly etc.

Guys, say what you want and chances are SB could accomodate you. Outside Coats/FLoris/McNair/Oakhill core areas, there are flexibilities to adjust some boundary to fit what you need. You just need to say it out loud so SB hear you. No accusation, at least keep some good faith.

I am a Xfield parent with kid currently at Oakton, and I would LOVE for him to be able to go to KAA instead.

Good for you. I am a Xfield parent who like Oakton's stability and past performance, but not completely object to KAA because its state-of-art facility. However it could be quite disconcerting to send my kids to an unpredictable environment without established staff and procedures. So I'd rather stay with Oakton if I had to chose. But if my kids were K-3 I would not mind wait and see.

I actually think the new school will get staffed really easily with really good teachers - a lot of FCPS teachers live in Loudoun and Prince William counties and they will all be vying for teaching spots at a school MUCH closer to their homes. I think that's why Carson attracts the best teachers.

Seriously stop making everything about Langley. I don't know if it's one person obsessed with this high school or several but it's so old.

Same. This was a big topic amongst parents at Carson 7th BTSN last night. Our kids would be the first ones at this new school if we're zoned there.

Westfield had great teachers when it opened. I know they took a terrific counselor from Chantilly and great coaches from Fairfax. They also had very strong administration.
