Yes, I am sorry for you all. A lot of people have fulfilled the terms of the contractual agreement they made, and they aren’t being honored. |
I would add, this is a lot like parental leave to me. I had my kids before parental leave was more of a thing. I scraped time together, and I went back before I was ready. It sucked. Now leave is far more available across public and private sectors. Great for newer moms! Too bad for me! But I don’t begrudge them that. We’ve decided, as a society, that it’s a good thing. Similarly, with PSLF, we decided that we wanted young people to go into public service in exchange for loan discharge. That is the benefit to society. I think we can quibble about the specific repayment rules enacted by Biden (well, not here, as most posters are very uninformed), but PSLF is a good thing for society. And it’s a shame that it’s been so hard for people to obtain, even after they fulfill their years in public service. |
Taxpayers had to pay off the loans for the MPHs of bureaucrats who erroneously forced me and my kids to isolate at home during COVID. I have no idea why the Dems lost. |
Read your second paragraph again and you may understand why voters turned away from the democrats on this issue. Blatant attempts to do end runs around the courts were a disgusting act by Biden. |
Were you equally disgusted by the Trump administration who went out of their way to refuse to enforce the law in 2017-2020 when the first PSLF cohorts were supposed to be forgiven? The Trump administration was blatantly ignoring the plain letter law. If not, STFU and sit down. Though I’m surprised you can even with a such a large leather boot stuck in your gullet. |
PP here: I’m sorry to hear this. I hope you get the forgiveness you legally are owed. The federal government and servicers are breaking the law. |
Why give out loans if the Democrats are just going to forgive them down the road? |
Thank you, but it’s not looking good. I just wish that some people could see the nuances and grey areas on this issue. There are many. |
You mean he is sending US, the taxpayer, the bill? |
DP but I thought it was in your promissory note that you're done after 25 years but pay taxes on the balance. How is the gov getting around that? |
I’m not ok with corporate welfare at all. But if you sign up for loan then presumably you have read and agreed to the conditions. If the conditions are lousy then it’s your fault for taking the loan. It could be considered an extra bit of education. |
YOU took out a loan to pay for your education. Why am I, a taxpayer, liable for YOUR debt? If I am, taxpayers can be forced to pay off car loans or mortgages. Pay your bill and shut up, don’t expect yet another handout from the govt. |
Servicers did not have full payment history since one loan may have been transferred to 3-4 servicers over a 25 year period. Dept of Ed has the complete records but under Trump admin the DoE was not helping services reconcile the full payment history to verify 20/25 years of payments. Further, before the balance can be forgiven and discharged by a serviced, Dept of Ed has to sign off on it. Dept of Ed simply sat on their hands during the Trump administration. Finally, servicers make more money the more loans they have to process and maintain. The incentivizes of the services are 100% opposed to those of the borrowers that made 20/25 years of payments. They simply wouldn’t act or gave borrowers bad information on purpose to pad their servicing profits Biden administration did a ton of work to fix these issues |
I'm sorry some of you have to pay your bills. If not, can I get my electricity bills paid next? |
There’s literally programs in all 50 states to help poor people pay for electricity and heating oil lol |
