They did in Japan. It just wasn't culturally common here.

Also there was a law against it in VA (due to masks being used for crimes, nothing related to illness).

I don't think they are particularly helpful for avoiding illness if you ever plan to take them off in the presence of other human beings, but I can see how some people think they are being polite wearing them.

Being able to see peoples mouths is such a huge element for language development in kids. Elementary teachers should be maskless.

Because they probably didn’t realize it was an option.

That’s right. Don’t be an elementary school teacher if you develop any health issues (or anyone in your family does). If you do, you need to transfer to MS or HS immediately.

Several things can be true at once:

Some people have immunity issues that make masking at work a good idea especially in a place like a school where it's common for viruses to circulate aggressively.

Wearing a mask can make it harder for other people to understand you.

There are people who do not have immunity issues but have started masking since Covid because of generalized health fears.

If it were me I would assume the teacher has a genuine issue requiring her to mask because there is nothing useful to be gained from trying to figure out if she "deserves" to wear a mask.

However if my kid was expressing that it was hard for her to hear or understand the teacher (and especially if my kid had any language development deficits or other needs that would make the obstacle of the mask prohibitive to learning) I would discretely ask if my kid could be moved to a classroom where the teacher was not always masked because I wouldn't want my kid to fall behind because she was struggling to understand the teacher.

I would be very careful in how I framed this request and make it clear that I support the teacher in doing what she needs to stay healthy and safe while also asserting my kid's right to be in a classroom where her learning needs are met.

We can all be grown ups here.

Of course not. Instead we should just tell kids who can't hear or understand their teacher to suck it up and figure it out because their learning needs are not a priority in the classroom.

Change schools if it bothers you.

I'm sure this story killed at the trailer park. Why do people like you have kids? You could have aborted. Planned parenthood is all over the place. It's just laziness.

It's been a month since school started. I was hoping it was temporary but she's still wearing it. I'm a total jerk if I say something and nothing would change, but I can't be the only one out there who would be bothered by this?

You should be happy your kid has a teacher with brains

What is wrong with people, jfc, you'd rather expose your child - and every other on the bus - to his illnesses? What a disgusting person you are.

Here’s a data point of 1. My kid absolutely hated wearing a mask (and no I didn’t put the idea in her head). She wears glasses and it sucked. And this year unprompted she mentioned one of her teachers was masking early in the year and she said she hoped the teacher wasn’t going to wear it all year because it was hard to tell if she was mad or joking.

You don’t know what all the kids think or feel and neither do I. So stop saying you do.

You can tell no issue. I hate masking but I have no other choice. If people were considerate and stayed home sick and transmission went down maybe I could stop. See how that works. Most people hate it. Try being empathetic and teach your kid empathy. You are fortunate you don’t have to deal with what some of us do. My kid is worried I will die. Be glad your kid doesn’t have that worry.

That's never going to happen. We are sick as often as we are not. People would lose their jobs. Even the fever example, the days with fever are 1-2 out of 1-2 weeks of being sick and infectious.

I bet if you masked, you wouldn't be sick 50% of the time.

1) Yes, you would be a total jerk.
2) Yes, you're the only one out there who is bothered by this.

This doesn't affect you. Don't be that awful person.
