Has NPR lost America’s trust?

Maybe it keeps reappearing because it's a real thing, and thus worth discussing. Just a thought.

It’s not. If you actually listened to it you’d hear a variety of stories/perspectives. The right just wants to discredit non-crazy news sources leading up to the election.

Wamu has lots of regular topics covered on shows like Fresh Air and 1A and On Point. the shows that focus on social justice/race like Code Switch are also good because they generally delve into the issues with nuance & interesting perspective. But yeah, I cannot stand the vapid fake reporting of Morning Edition and ATC.

This is an interesting perspective and I definitely get it. I think I'd almost say the same. I feel like Morning Edition has been better in the last several months. I also don't think they get enough/any credit for interviewing Republicans or conservatives, which they do. Just today they had an interview with an AZ Republican who opposes the 6 week abortion ban. Both parties were respectful of each other. And the host didn't challenge him when he outlined his position, which was basically pro-choice.

They constantly do.

Which is how those of us who do listen to NPR know that many posters on this thread are completely full of crap.

Exactly. NPR news segments are still more trustworthy than most.

I don't think it's a matter of trustworthiness. Their reporting is factually accurate but I don't trust them to tell me all that is newsworthy, or to consider all angles of the topics it covers. Certainly, we can agree that NPR is not so far to the left as Fox is far to the right, and that, unlike Fox, NPR is making an effort at fair reporting. It just has trouble taking certain points of view seriously, so they dismiss certain angles and stories as too dumb to report. They could do with some humility in this regard.

No, it’s not. I was on the ground in Israel during the last war (not the current one) and of all news outlets, NPR was the most egregious in omitting details about anything Hamas did, including the 3000 rockets they fired the first night before Israel responded. A friend called it “National Palestinian Radio.” They may report facts, but only the ones that support their chosen narrative.

NP.
I listened to NPR for years. Eventually I stopped precisely because of what this journalist has written about.

The detractors are the ones parroting BS things from the RWNJ echo-chambers. Typical projection.

So what news sources do you use now?

It's true that I don't listen to them as much since they've traveled into DEI territory much of the time, with (ironically!), very little diversity of arguments.

But it's important we keep a free and nationally available radio news source! For the good of the public.

why is it important in 2024? Just a few years ago I would have agreed with you but now meh I can let it go. Plenty of other free media and also NPR doesn’t really represent the public but just a liberal viewpoint. And I am a liberal.

I am also now ok with ending support for public tv. I think it was valuable for a long time but now there is enough free media and ability to access it.

It is important in 2024 to have something that is not about profit and not owned by some right-wing billionaire. There are no longer good independent news sources available in many local markets.

You may not like all of the stories on NPR, but their news segments are fine. People in localities where the local news is all right-wing nonsense and that no longer have a local paper need access to some news that's not BS.

You are very dismissive of conservative thinking with your "right wing nonsense" comment. It's not all nonsense, and attitudes like yours are one reason NPR is losing listeners and donations.

We read online sites (Atlanta Journal Constitution, NY Times, WAPO, CNN, Fox News, community news, etc)

"But when the Mueller report found no credible evidence of collusion, NPR’s coverage was notably sparse."

On the contrary, the Mueller Report found numerous evidence of COLLUSION - but COLLUSION is not a chargeable crime. And it's very difficult to prove a conspiracy without one of the co-conspirators flipping and testifying, which Manafort and Stone refused to do because they knew that Trump would pardon them (which he did).

Or how he says Hunter Biden's laptop isn't Russian disinformation. Actually it looks like it may be.

And he's still pushing the "lab leak" theory of Covid which is not the same thing as "Covid was created in the lab." But he doesn't seem to know that.

He needs to stop watching Fox News.

He lost my trust with those comments.

NPR is awful. I am listening to Hot Jazz Saturday night tight now, but that is all until next Saturday.

It is far more left-biased than Fox is right-biased. When is the last time they hired a straight, white, male Republican? Never.

above, tight now = right now
