A general note to clubs about tryouts

Are these only to try to fill out lowest team? Can a kid with decent skills get considered for a higher team if they only attend the supplemental tryout? Or should we assume all offers for higher teams have gone out and they would not displace any of those kids for a new kid at this point?

Related question — do coaches give feedback after such tryouts? Wondering the value of attending just to see how coaches think kid would fit into their system. Would not leave current team to join this club’s lower team but potentially interested for future…

My kid is only 12, but based on our experience trying out with multiple clubs this season (and hearing how things have played out for friends/teammates), I’d be shocked if there were still offers for higher level teams going out at this point.

My kid asked for feedback directly (from a coach who did not extend an offer, fwiw) and got some constructive feedback. Really recommend that they learn to do this themselves.

So if you got an offer now from a first or second team at one of these mega-clubs, you know your kid was not their first choice and might have been their last pick, and might not okay much?

I thought it was very strange that the coaches never spoke with the parents or sent out any kind of email communication or gave any kind of indication as to when kids would hear from them. If the communication is this poor and disorganized for tryouts, not sure how it bodes well for the regular season.

Well, the good news is they might have saved you $3000. Silver lining, and all that.

They might still be filling their top teams and second teams rosters, and hadnt gotten to third team yet. So you might get a 3rd-4th team offer later this week.

I know for sure my child is not going to be a first team first choice. She’s a new comer to a big, established team. And she definitely has room to grow. So I’m just going to be thrilled if she gets a first team slot, I don’t care if she was the last choice. Second team slot, I don’t care why they chose her, but we may not choose back.

Most people don't care if their kid is the first choice or a middle choice, its being one of the last few players that is really not a good situation for most.

Yeah, not sure what to do over here. Kid has an offer in hand from current club s/he is being pressured to accept, but still waiting to hear from "Pallor". Their last try-out was this weekend. I really hate the pressure.

If the kid knows it going in and is willing to fight for playing time by treating every practice like a try out and playing their butt off when they get in the game, it can work. It's more pressure than most kids want and it doesn't make teammates happy when practice scrimmages are as physical as games, but if they're willing to put in the work, they can move up the depth chart. For an older kid who knows what they are getting, it's a great opportunity

E-mail and say that you have another offer with a deadline and that you'd prefer pallor, but the kid wants to make sure they're on a team next year. I've had to do that for my kids a couple of times and reasonable coaches will understand.

Most clubs are open to you reaching out and telling them your kid is very intersed, want honest feedback about where your kid falls because another club us pressuring you to make a decision or lose your spot.

No you wouldn’t be. As a PP says, offers for those teams are often offered prior to the tryouts start. That is, they know how many spots they’re trying to fill through tryouts.

That said, I don’t think it matters if you belatedly get an offer on the 1st or maybe 2nd team on a big club. Those offers are an opportunity to develop.

If you’re being considered for the first team of a big club, know that your kid is probably at that level to compete against them. So find another smaller club that competes in the same division as that first team and see if you can get on that team as well.

We (girl, now U11) have had great luck with Classic for skills development in the U10 year! Is this for a girl or boy?

This is for a boy. Is there any Classic program in particular that people think has a reputation for good skills development?

It might be helpful to share if you’re a seasoned travel sport parent, if your child was able to work themselves up from a lower level team to a top or near the top team at a big club.

How realistic is movement within a big club?

Or whether someone has successfully tried out from outside the club and gotten on a top team?

I know two U12 girls who got on the top team from outside. Both are incredibly skilled players.
