Bus on Murch field trip crashes, kids hurt, bus driver charged with DUI

On a much less important note, but one that might indicate the cognitive state of the company’s CEO, when one roams far afield, such as on a field trip, the spelling is not Rome. Presumably they had more destinations than that city. I dunno, maybe Ron Rome is the CEO or someone had a sense of humor. Had they not hired DWI drivers I might be more willing to give that benefit of the doubt.

The address on LinkedIn for Rome Charters LLC is a SF home in Lorton.

How is this allowed?

Unless you have an HOA that prohibits it, you can legally operate a business out of your home.

The new 3 page DCPS field trip permission has to be in direct response to this — the waivers are extensive.

how does making parents fill out this long form solve for the problem of the drunk bus driver? This just makes me not want to chaperone a field trip which seems counter productive given the adults on the bus were the ones rectifying the situation

It’s been three pages as long as I’ve been in DCPS.

?? Ours have always been 1 page.

It’s actually been quite long, but most teachers only send the last page.

Just realized that link specifically references study abroad, but other than that line it looks exactly like what I send home for field trips in elementary.

I would think that this could be something approved through DDOT, like a CDL with a School Bus transport endorsement.

This is so sad, but fortunately no one was hurt.

I think this may usher in a much needed check and balance in this industry.

That's true.

I am not certain how equipped schools are to manage credentials from bus drivers. Seems like there should be a more organized way of analyzing this.

How is an individual school supposed to do this?

Check with drivers the day of the trip and ask to see drivers licenses, I'm assuming. Not unless schools create their own electronic system of driver records for field trips.

So let’s make the principals or teachers the people with primary liability? Great.

+1

This is the type of stuff DCPS pulls all the time. This doesn’t solve the problem because teachers and admin have no clue what a valid CDL license looks like. And how would they know it wasn’t revoked? Do teachers now have to breathalyze the bus driver too? Put all onus on the schools while central office staff sit at home.

This is always what DCPS Central does. Dump all work and responsibilities on school staff.

Any movement on this???

What are you referring to?

My understanding is that DCPS removed the bus company from its list of options and the driver is moving through the court system.

If you mean - any investigation into how this happened and how DCPS contracted with this company and is the company still in business?
- not a clue.
