How many players have been showing up at tryouts thus far? Are we seeing 40 to 50 players for 12 to 15 roster spots? More? Less?

I realize that some clubs will have tryouts covering multiple age groups ... and multiple teams within a single age group. It seems that the numbers have increased greatly at some pre-tryout clinics over the past week. I wonder if that kind of turnout will spill over into this weekend's tryouts.

Of the 4 we did, we heard 55 tried out for 12 spots at one (but that was day 1, they had tryouts Day 2 as well) and another had close to 70, and another much lower tiered club had 45.

Forgot to mention the 4th club I heard it was close to 50 as well.

According to the tiered list posted a few pages back, these would mostly be Tier 2 & 3 clubs, with a Tier 4+ in there too.

My advice, as the mother of 2 college players is don’t get too stressed - if you fancy the college route - it’s basically all down to physical potential, so if your kid is 5’6, is an incredible player and plays outside, it’s still never happening, if your kid is 6’3 (or projected to be), can jump out of the gym but can’t hit the ball - never fear, she’s going D1 regardless. Also, quite a low percentage of kids go all the way through from13s to 18s at any club, so keep looking at the various clubs. There’s not much loyalty at these clubs - a better player comes in, and bang someone’s out. If your DD wants to play for fun, I would recommend not playing at any of the top clubs. Whatever stress levels you think you are experiencing, just wait till college coaches arrive on the scene. Good luck - I don’t miss it.

This is SO TRUE.......having been through it with 2 kids as well. Just enjoy the ride. If possible, have your kid, especially if they are not over 6' tall (or projected to be), play multiple positions and LEARN TO SERVE RECEIVE & PLAY DEFENSE. Many 5'9" - 5'11" OH in club/HS gets converted over to DS in college.......so be careful if a club tells your DD her role is just right side. There is NO LOYALTY with the clubs - clubs get upset when you leave but also actively recruit better players from other club!

What do "OH" and "DS" mean in the bolded above?

Don’t worry, I’ve had 2 kids go through 20 years combined of volleyball and I am still clueless about the finer points of the game.

This certainly isn't the only source for describing court positions ... and other aspects of youth volleyball, but Coach Johns offers her perspectives in her Volley Truth series on YouTube:

FWIW, Coach Johns came to one of my DD's games during the fall high school (FCPS) season.

Coach Johns is PHENOMENAL! Such an amazing coach and woman. I heard her daughter is playing for Paramount's U13 team this season. It wouldn't at all surprise me if Coach Johns is coaching for Paramount next season.

What’s the best U12 club team? My DD got club offers from Moco, MEVC and MVSA. All for their #1 teams. Curious to know if we made the right decision.

MVSA is the best for U12. The coach is great and well known for developing players.

Another vote for MVSA, followed by Moco

How is Hong in moco? Is it a scam?

According to the rankings MVSA is much better than MEVC and MOCO. Not sure if your DD should stay with MVSA once she gets older.

+1 - MVSA has a great 12s program, and MOCO isn't far behind. Both MVSA & MOCO 12s compete at the upper level in the tournaments were its available.

With 12s though, you really shouldn't be looking at the rankings -- its the least important aspect of 12s volleyball. Instead, evaluate based on the player development you see. Winning is a lot less important than developing the proper fundamentals, including the skills, attitude, energy and effort required to play club volleyball at a higher level.
