If I remember correctly they gave the dates during our son's interview but waiting on official information about the summer program.

Congrats to your student! It sounds like it must not be "required" since you haven't heard from school about it. If that's the case it's nice to have it in place for kids who may feel they need it or want to do extra summer studies. I hope the school year goes well!

It's required. At least it was last year.

Current parent here. It’s required. The school can be very slow with communications. They will reach out closer to the end of the year. Last year, I ended up calling to confirm because I was scheduling summer trips and sports camp. They are extremely friendly and open to questions.

This slow communication from Banneker is driving me. I am excited my child got in but damm. IDK why I am expecting some sort of communication I.e. Welcome letter the summer program will be these dates etc

Oh wow...I'm the PP who asked about the summer program. I don't think that's for us. Good to know, so thanks for all of the info. I agree that the school should get the word out to current/new families much earlier!

Banneker Summer Institute is “required” but if you have a conflict, it is totally fine. The dates haven’t been solidified because of the DCPS calendar change and then reversal.

The summer institute is a conflict with our usual summer plans but it's only for 1 year. All of us will survive!

But poor communication from Banneker will last for 4 years.

I thought it was for two summers?

Only 1 summer. 5 weeks is enough.

I assume it’s because they’re dealing with older kids with some independence.

What does that have to do with Banneker’s poor communication?

I don’t get why summer school is required for incoming students. That’s ridiculous.

The school communicates with the kids directly.
