Does your toddler eat salad?

Anonymous
I'd really like to start making salads for dinner but I have 2 and 3 y.o.s and there is no way they would eat that. Does your toddler/preschooler eat salad? If not, do you still make it? Do you also give them something else for dinner? Do you give them just the protein?

Thanks for any suggestions

A couple times a week we include salad on their plate (4 yr old and 20 mo old). It usually justs gets pushed around, maybe a bite or two.
Our dinners usually have a meat/protein, a starch, and a vegetable. My kids like peas, carrots, and broccoli, so we usually stick to those.

Shockingly, yes. At least so far. DS is only 21 mo and recently has wanted to eat some salad. We don't make it the main part of the meal, but give him some torn up leaves with salad dressing. Maybe just try it as one of a variety of sides?

My 2 yr old and 4 yr old happily eat salad if it has dressing on it. We usually use spinach so it's a legitimate vegetable, not just romaine or iceberg.

Yes, my 3 yr old loves salad. Sadly her older brother won't touch it.

My 3.5 year old won't eat any raw vegetables. She's good if they're steamed. So no, no salad yet.

For those whose kids dont eat salad, do you serve it for dinner? If so, do you make the kids something different?

Same here! (but it has to be with "orange" [i.e., French] dressing and "crunchy bread" [i.e., croutons])

My 18 m/o old won't eat green leafy veggies but he will eat tomato & cucumber. If we are having salad, I just fix him a plate of the salad components he'll eat. We often do dinner salads with pasta or potatoes, chicken or another meat, or beans, etc. In that case we do a tossed salad for the grownups and salad bits for the toddler.

Yes. We serve veggie salads of various sorts (some without greens, just fresh shopped veggies like cucubmer, tomato, pepper, radish, etc. with some dressing). If it does have greens I have to shred them first. Sometimes it's an afternoon snack or part of lunch or dinner, with protein either in or on the side.

Yes, DD who is 4 has been eating salad, or pieces w/ dressing (cucumbers, carrots) since she was about 2. She loves dipping raw cucumbers, carrots and broccoli in ranch dip (we stick w/ low fat/low sugar versions). I guess we are blessed w/ a good eater.

If you mean lettuce, then not really. But if you're talking about raw vegetables, then yes. DS is 2 and his favorite salad is Greek salad with loads of black olives. We don't really eat lots of lettuce but we do eat loads of fruit and vegetables, so I don't feel we're missing out on anything.

My picky 3.5 year old loves lettuce, of all things.

my 2 yr old loves salads and especially adores the whole foods salad bar... but she's a slim little thing, so my challenge has been to fatten up salads...

that said, dh is a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy, so we never just have salad for dinner.
