Does you child go to Kumon while at private school?

I have decided to send my DC to Kumon, I was surprised how many of his friends go as well. What does this say of our prestigious private school? My husband thinks I am crazy for wanting to send DS to Kumon when we are paying high tuition. How many of DCUrbanmom/dads send their kids?

I am seriously considering it for my rising 3rd grader because our math program is a wishy-washy joke. Spiraling, my ass. It keeps swirling round and round, yes, at a excruciatingly sloooooow pace.

NW DC private, fwiw. My DH also thinks the idea is offensive that we'd pay for Kumon on top of tuition. The alternative is tutoring, which I'm also considering.

I looked at Kumon, but just could not come up with the extra money.
I wish that these private schools would get better math curricula.

Yes I did for my DS, kumon really isn't anything but consistent repetition which sharpens up a kid's skills real well. My son is now a sophomore in a top private and is taking AB Calculus. Kumon established a solid foundation for him to expand, I think that's what was most important. I'd recommend it if you can shell out the extra cash. DS also plays elite club soccer and lacrosse so funding that with everything was challenging, but at the end, it was worth it.

I'd recommend it, too. My son was struggling with math in third grade and Kumon really solidified his skills.

We don't do extra academics but I have been shocked that so many of dc's 1st grade classmates do. Mostly tutors but a few at kumon. Big 3.

Yep...DC is doing Kumon right now as I type....typically in the mornings before school. Many classmates do Kumon as well.

To me, the big 3 at 30 K should be one stop shopping. You should not need Kumon.

School is never one-stop shopping. Kids have different strengths/weaknesses/interests, any of which might be addressed outside of school, time and money permitting.

That said, no Kumon, no tutors thus far. In retrospect, DC would have appreciated earlier differentiation. Didn't realize math was interesting until MS.

Kumon is mindless drilling but it does increase speed on math facts.

Beauvoir parent here and yes, my child is doing Kumon. Beauvoir's math program is above average but the kids are above average too and they should be doing more.

Maybe the reason these private schools kids are "above average" is because they have tutors? Discuss.

Just wondering... how much does Kumon cost? Is there a preferred center?

WHY? It must be bc you know Beauvoir's math program is notoriously weak and you are trying to make up for it.
