But, would the Big Ten Conference allow Notre Dame to play just 6 of 12 football games against Big Ten opponents until Notre Dame's 5 games per year obligation to the ACC expires ? The 12th game for Notre Dame would be against traditional rival Navy.

Notre Dame's 6 Big Ten Conference games could all be played on NBC.

If Notre Dame football moved to the Big ten Conference for just 6 games per year, the payout to Big Ten Conference teams would be at about $100 million each.

Your scenario will never happen.

Agree. The only reason the Notre Dame is in the B1G for hockey is that there aren’t enough teams in the conference who play the sport. Pretty much all other sports are covered by most conference teams and ND would naturally ally and want to be with the rest of the conference in those. It’s only in football that ND wants to be independent. Look for the Big 10 to freeze out the school if they don’t join on the future. There is little to no benefit for the B1G to schedule contests with ND.

Other than massive TV viewership ratings.

For one perhaps two games a year? Hardly worth it for the Big Ten. Notre Dame needs the Big Ten much more than the other way around.

Why should the Big Ten prop up ND so they can stay independent and enjoy all the benefits without the pitfalls of all the other teams with a conference affiliation?

Great question. You nailed the issue.

Actually, for almost every Notre Dame football game.

Why would the B1G care about ND’s ability to put “butts in the seats” of non conference schools? ND thinks they’re more important than the rest of college football. It’s high time they get their comeuppance.

They shouldn’t. ND has an inflated sense of its own importance.

ACC Presidents met this morning at 8am EST to discuss expansion regarding Cal, Stanford, and SMU.

ACC is rumored to be working hard to flip one vote. FSU, Clemson, UNC, & NC State are the four No votes.

North Carolina schools would have a problem with any women's athletic team using transgender athletes. Violates new North Carolina state law. Would be a potential lawsuit.

FSU or Clemson might flip if offered substantially more money to vote Yes.

(OP here)

The ACC Presidents meeting for this morning was cancelled abruptly and without any stated reason. Many believed that ACC expansion was to be the main topic of discussion.

Probably cancelled because the ACC Presidents could not flip FSU, Clemson, NC State, or UNC.

As odd as it may seem, I think that most misunderstand the position of thefour dissenters and wrongly thought that either UNC or NC State could be flipped. As I have pointed out a couple of times in this thread, UNC & NC State are unlikely to flip because of Stanford's use of transgender athletes on women's athletic teams which violates North Carolina state law. Adding Stanford and Cal would just be inviting a major lawsuit.

Lots of speculation that NC State might be persuaded to flip its vote regarding ACC expansion. I disagree due to the issue of transgender athletes competing on women's teams at Stanford-which is illegal in North Carolina.

There is a sense that Stanford & Cal are not valued by Power 4 football conferences--even for free.

Although the current vote in the ACC is 12 yes and 4 no, several of the yes votes are not enthusiastic about adding Stanford & Cal.

The 5 ACC member schools strongly in favor of adding Stanford & Cal are Notre Dame, Louisville, U Pitt, Georgia Tech, and U Miami.

To summarize, no one wants Stanford and FSU is stuck.

Appears that you are correct to the extent of enough support to be added to a Power 4 conference.

No Power 4 conference wants Cal, Stanford, or SMU--even for free. And, yes, it appears that FSU is stuck in the ACC.

Still surprised that a conference well regarded for its academics and intelligence would sign and subsequently extend such a handicapping agreement. More panic than foresight and wisdom.
