Dear Annoying Metro Riders

You do NOT have to wait for the gates to close from the person before you before you use your card to exit. Standing there, waiting for the gates to close, then using your card only slows things down and makes you look stupid.
Thanks.

It's tourist season!!!!!

eh, i've ridden for years and had a smartcard since they came out, and some of the changes they've made recently have made it so that you have to wait longer before your card registers. I got whacked in the hip twice in the last two weeks by gates that didn't open all the way, so I'm trying to be more patient from now on.

Take a deep breath. It helps a lot.

I can neither hear nor see well enough to tell if my card has actually been registered when I tap the target, so I usually wait for the gates to close before I try. I know it has worked when they open again. I don't want the gates closing on me, nor do I want to be wrestled to the ground by a metro cop for evading my fare.

OP, huffing and puffing while you wait ONE (1) second longer makes you look stupid and impatient.

I have been hit on the hips TOO MANY TIMES to count. I always wait so I don't have to deal with that.

I've also had the issue where I go through right after someone else, only to discover the next day my card didn't register and I have to talk to the attendant, which usually involves stellar customer service and only eats up 5-10 minutes of my morning. NO THANKS.

What does it add on to wait, like .5 seconds? Seriously, OP, welcome to the city, where there are other people doing the same things you want to do, which means you don't get to rush around like you're the only one who matters. Learn some patience, and be grateful you only live in D.C. and not a world-class city with a HUGE public transit system (like NYC, Tokyo, or Paris), where I'm sure you'd go nuts your first day.

How about: Dear Annoying Metro Riders - when there are 10 other people waiting with you to get on the train, don't step in and stop at doorway so no one else can board without pushing your stupid ass out of the way.

Ahh, that felt good.

It's never been one second for me. It's been more like 5. Double annoying points for people who have to fish their card out of their pocket while standing at the gate after waiting for it to close.

I also am annoyed when I step out of a train to make room for people getting off and the people on the platform will not take a step back so that I'm not in the way. Trying to be helpful, folks, scootch back a few inches.

You must be very important. I'm not nearly that important. If I was so important that waiting a few extra seconds at the gate would make a difference, I would probably leave a little early with the expectation that people who aren't from the D.C. area might be using Metro as well, and might take a little longer than those of us who ride frequently.

But that's just me.

Op has some serious anger to let go of.

Just leave the house 30 seconds earlier. You will shave ten points off your blood pressure.

You know what I love. Is when the train is jam packed full and there is always that one person that tries to get to the door while the train is in full motion. I was holding on by the door and this man was knocking his way through people to be able to stand dead in front of doors as they opened. I told him to not touch me and to wait until the train stopped and he was rude to me. I told him to F-off!

look down when you tap and when the green light comes on it's registered.

Well, OP, now you know who all the morons are who can't figure out the faregates. I'm with you. Especially at rush hour, you have to keep the lines moving. But naturally, folks in this town only think about themselves...
