It seems like some parents of August kids who held their kid back for sports are just upset that the kids who weren't held back might now get the same sports advantage they are getting. Why are you so concerned with forcing only certain kids to play up with kids more than a year older than them? |
Its called SY ie School Year. Its not called August 1st Birth Year. |
| I think they simply said that the cutoff dates are changing to Aug 1 - July 31. Which aligns better with the school year. Everything else is your imagination. |
|
Why is there so much concern about August kids that will be the oldest in the new age groups?
Just move on, close the thread. It’s over. August is the new January. Don’t make me comeback to this thread.

What a nob… |
It's more the grade misalignment and how it creates a mess. Many will argue it's a better problem to have than the grade misalignment and trapped players under the BY system, but it will remain a headache nonetheless. |
Its hard trying to beat some sense into some people. I prefer BY but if you're going to do SY do it right. At least US Club came to their senses and switched from 9/1 to 8/1. But, the reason they wanted 9/1 initially is to not have all the Aug birthday issues. Which is exactly what SY+30 addresses. The Aug birthdays are included but theres no grade mismatch. With an 8/1 cutoff there will be Aug birthday players a grade up in school playing on teams with all or most players a grade down. If these players make it to olders their parents will most likely make them repeat 8th grade to get them on the right track for recruitment. In the end 8/1 will be causing parents to hold back kids in school. If leagues had done SY+30 with a 9/1 cutoff this would never have happened. |
Correct, and once it gets institutionalized that Aug birthdays play down a grade then regrade in 8th grade youth soccer is that much closer to doing GY where 1 and 2 year holdbacks are the norm and table stakes for winning nationally. All because leagues didnt implement something like SY+30 which stops all the playing down nonsense. |
| You all are crazy. It’s a rare case that a family will have a kid repeat 8th grade just for soccer. These will be outliers, not the norm. |
If you had an Aug birthday kid would you play them with their grade and be the youngest on the team. Or would you play them with the grade down and the the oldest on the team? If they play on their grade team they ride the bench. If they play on the grade down team they're a superstar. Its fairly easy to guess what parents will do. When this happens it will lead to kids being held back in school because of youth soccer. |
100%!!! |

Is there more than one SY+30/60/90/120 advocate or is it one person who has 30% of the total replies on this thread??
Lots of free time I guess………. |
Ok let's play out what will happen if an aug player is playing down a grade and parents dont hold them back. 1st They'll want to play HS soccer when the rest of the team is still in middle school. This will screw up the season for the club team because club schedules arent setup to accommodate this. 2nd recruiters wont know what to do with these players because theyre graduating a year earlier than what they're recruiting for. So they'll mostly get ignored or lost in the shuffle. But I guess all those youngers wins will be worth it. |
Its called math you should learn about it. Trapped players can only be addressed if you have a window of qualification and second level of qualification. Using a single cutoff date will have trapped players no matter what date is chosen. |
