DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| I heard that a bunch of spaces will be opening up next year (80-100) But I recently drove by the new location and it doesn't look like it's going to be ready for students in September. Any current parent have info? Thanks! |

Current Yu Ying parent here. I have every confidence that the building will be done before the beginning of school next year. The school administration has proven that they are able to get things done.

Thank you for responding. I appreciate your confidence. Looks like it's going to be a lovely schoolhouse.
I'm very excited by the slightly better odds of being admitted that the move brings. |
Plus, there is no back-up plan. |
| Where is Yu Ying moving to in the fall? |
1250 Taylor NE. It is gorgeous - probably the most attractive elementary school in the city (including the expensive privates). It's such a beautiful building that I would't even care if they open a month late. |
But the financing is not yet in place, at least not 100% in place |
No, I think you mean 220 Taylor NE. Good luck getting into Bridges!
|
| Yes, bridges is 1250 Taylor NW. Yu Ying will be 220 NE. Fingers crossed. |
| Can anyone confirm the number of available spots for Pre-k? |
| I have heard about a hundred, but only for that one class. The following years will shrink again. (If correct.) |

I think this is accurate. 6 sections of preK, each with 2 teachers and 18 students. Total students: 108. Siblings of current students/founders/staff: 21. Leaves 87 slots for random entrants.
Lottery will be conducted starting with 2nd grade, then 1st, then K, then preK. There are a few slots in each of the upper grades due to attrition and slight increase in numbers of classes (e.g., transitioning from 2 sections of 25 = 50, to 4 sections of 14 = 58, means 8 new slots). As the upper grade selections are made, if the newly admitted student has a younger sibling, then the younger sibling will be admitted as well, so could take some of the preK slots in advance of the preK random lottery. Almost 500 students applied across the 4 entry grades, presumably most of them PreK applicants. New students to K, 1, & 2 must attend Summer Program June 24 to July 8. Wait list is sorted by date the student's application was submitted. So, overall odds are at least 17% for preK admission (87 slots divided by 500 applicants). In the past couple of years, there has been a lot of movement on the YY preK wait list in the fall. Here is my theory. It is such a specialized program that if a family accepts a slot, because nothing else was available, and then gets a call from a more traditional DCPS preK, or a Spanish Immersion charter, etc. they are more likely to move a child several weeks into the school year. On the other hand, if a family gets a phone call from YY in late Sept, they are less likely to leave a traditional PreK / other language immersion unless they really really want Chinese immersion. So the fall movement tends to sort out those who really want the Chinese, a good thing for everyone. Lottery Wed Apr 6th. |
| Even if 500 kids applied to Yu Ying, I'd assume that many of those families did what I did when I applied and did other schools, DCPS options, or private schools. Many may have already decided on a DCPS option, or another charter school as their first choice if they get in, so I actually think your odds are a lot better. |
Yes. Not everyone wants such an intense environment. |
| In other news, they closed on the new building. |
