just beginning to think about moving to montgomery county from dc for the schools. hate the idea of being far from dc. any recommendations for a neighborhood to start with. currently live in a dc house that is probably worth $700-$800K+. cannot afford more than that.

Try East Bethesda, although most of the houses on sale are of the newly built after a tear down, which will be well over 1 mil.

The Town of Chevy Chase. Also, in that price range, don't run from homes on a major road (Wisconsin, Connecticut, East West Hwy), you get so much house for your money, are in the neighborhood you want to be in, and often walkable to the metro.

I think you can get even closer in than what some PP have indicated. There are a few pockets of neighborhoods just over the DC line that have homes in the $700K to $800K range. Closer to the higher end of that range, but you might find a home in Crestview (just off Western Ave 20816 zip). Or Westgate which also sits inside Western and Mass Ave in 20816. And even in Chevy Chase, there are occasionally homes in Orchardale and Brookdale neighborhoods that run in the $800K range. There is also Green Acres (off River Rd)and several neighborhoods off of Mass Ave close to the DC line. You won't find a lot of inventory in this price range, but with a thorough search and willingness to have flexible search perameters, you'll be successful.

I'm a Realtor that focuses primarily in Bethesda-Chevy Chase and NW DC, so if you want to discuss your existing home or future plans more specifically, feel free to contact me at sams@lnf.com

We live in Rock Creek Forest and love it. Bought our house for $500K this year. It required a lot of work, but the schools are worth it. Nothing is more important than my children's education.

There's one just on the market on Harling that's not a teardown (2 BR on the first floor and a gabled second floor)-- they are asking $800 I think.

Watch for proximity to Purple Line tracks.

Hi OP. It depends to which part of DC you want to be close to. I live in Bethesda and find it quite far from the DC areas that interest me (around downtown, georgetown, and gallery place, and the Mall). I think that north arlington (the close in stations) are much closer - distance wise, than bethesda. There are a few options available in your price range, though it would be nothing huge / too fancy. If you would consider condos, there are a few in Friendship heights (i think that would be somerset / chevy chase areas) and they feed into good school, and are almost across the road to DC and on the red line.

I know it's going to be tough for you. You may want to think about the Wheaton area around Viers Mill Road.
