I'd definitely check out Rock Creek Forest and North Chevy Chase. |
I second the rec for Hillmead. Great, cohesive neighborhood for families, feeds into Bradley Hills/Pyle/Whitman. Houses range from 500K for a small cape to almost 3M for a new on a huge lot. For Bethesda, there is a reasonable amount of economic diversity, which I like. |
Dunlop Hills in Chevy Chase |
There are regularly homes for sale in East Bethesda neighborhoods near the DC line that fit your price range. We live in Crestview, 15 minute walk to Friendship Heights, and there are often homes for sale in that range. Its about a ten minute drive to northern Gtown from our house w/out traffic. |
The Crestview neighborhood is great because it's so close to Friendship Heights and there is quick access to Mass Ave. to get downtown. I used to live there, but to get a bigger house, we had to move further out. We're in Glenbrook Knolls, right off Old Georgetown Road, walking distance to the Bethesda metro. |
We made this same move several years ago and found you get a LOT more house just the other side of NIH. East Bethesda is fabulous for proximity, but the school zoning is wacky and the houses are either tiny or new builds. East Bethesda feeds into Rosemary Hills E.S. in Silver Spring for K-2 and then they have to transfer to a separate school for the rest of E.S. Not the end of the world, but you should be aware there is no neighborhood E.S. for the early years. We ended up in Maplewood/Alta Vista. It and Locust Hills both are walkable to the NIH metro and you can get a 4 BR split with a good size yard in your price range. You do need to know that although we're only like 2 miles north of East Bethesda with the traffic on Wisconsin that can be a long two miles. We mostly metro during rush hour and avoid driving downtown by taking metro. Good luck. |
Agree completely. And please avoid Wheaton like the plague - bad schools and higher crime rate than Silver Spring, Rockville, Bethesda and Chevy Chase. |
True, but Rosemary Hills ES is a great school and there are advantages to only being k-2. And being walkable to Bethesda is great - there is nothing in NIH... |
If you you are not the type to have three kids, three cars and two dogs then Crestview or Green Acres in Bethesda are excellent choices. Both are very close to DC. |
What about Kensington? Straight down Conn or Wisc and you have your D.C. |
Some of Kensington is Einstein. You really don't want to be in that area. |
Look at the neighborhoods around Ashburton Elementary. Great schools and more affordable part of Bethesda. And you are not too far from DC. |
But a lot of Kensington is not. Just stick with Chevy Chase View and Parkwood, and Kensington is fabulously close-in and otherwise family fantastic ; ) |
Chevy Chase View is a hotbed of extreme Catholicism. Very unfriendly to people who won't bend their knee to the Vicar of Rome. |
I am moving from DC to Silver Spring/Aspen Hill. Even though it is in Downcounty, I went for the house that I wanted. The ones close in were very small and needed total rehab. Will try for Blair in the Choice process or RM in county-wide. Otherwise, it will be private hs. |
