Expectant and Postpartum Moms
i went in for a 36 week sonogram today and they got a profile of our daughter and her nose and mouth look really strange. is this normal? I am freaked out and have been concerned about craniofacial abnormalities since the beginning because I was on heavy doses of antibiotics in the beginning of my pregnancy. The sonographer said they tend to look big on sonograms but I still don't feel much better.
Did her upper lip look bigger than the lower and jutted out? That's how both of my kids looked in ultrasounds but neither looked that way at birth or since.
mine looked like that. haven't had him yet but neither tech nor doc seemed alarmed. DH said he (baby) looked like an ape. total yes to PP - big upper lip looking almost merged with nose, etc. totally freaky.
OP, you can look at a bunch of other people's ultrasound photos on various websites. That might make you feel better.
DS had a big nose and really weak chin on US, which is exactly what he looked like at birth. Not a great looking newborn, and he even says so when he looks at his NB photo. But he grew a chin and his nose is fine, and at almost 15 is a nice looking kid. He was a very cute older baby and toddler, BTW. I think you'll be fine!
Ah, the infamous late-stage sono! Don't get freaked out. I was super excited when my OB asked if I wanted a late-stage sonogram b/c I thought I'd get to see my baby's face really well. The pictures made it look like she had clown lips and a gigantic flat nose. I was freaked out the rest of the time - up until the minute I met her. She was a gorgeous baby and is one of the most beautiful 5-year olds I know. They are just so smushed up in there towards the end that their faces literally look like they are squished up against a glass pane. You know, complete with the pig snout and everything. I knew better with my second one, and avoided the late stage US to skip all the anxiety.

My kid looked so weird on the ultrasound and she's pretty cute in person, or at least that's what my friends tell me. I think they all look like little aliens in the womb.
don't be surprised, also, if your baby is not the cutest the first day of her life. our daughter was all puffy and had goo smeared over her eyes, and her head was a bit cone-shaped. Day or two later - totally different baby. |
Hey - its tight in there! Especially at the end of your pregnancy. My daughter's nose was flattened out and I was embarrassed to show the picture to people. And she was perfect and beautiful when born. It was just a bad photo op. Don't worry about it.
All babies have recessed chins. We forgot about that between babies and had to remind each other that our second wouldn't need a chin implant.
i was terrified to see my baby b/c he looked so funny in the ultrasound. i'm not biased at all, but he is/was one of the most beautiful babies i've ever seen.

I was a little concerned at a 36 week sono a few days ago because baby looked like she had a really weak chin.
Funny, because I was downright alarmed a few months ago when a sono showed baby with a Jay Leno chin! |
DS looked like an alien in the sono, was born with a big, flat nose and super weak chin. Now adorably in proportion.
Yes, exactly! She it looked like she has a huge nose, even bigger upper lip and a sunken chin. These responses have made me feel better. Thanks DCUMers!

May I also slightly frighten you by saying that your first look at her after coming out of you, she may look more than a little weird then too -- conehead, huge hawk nose, misshappen face? But this is normal too and in a few days she will look like the Gerber Baby.
Yes, newborns aren't always so cute! My ds was born with no cartilage in his ears and just had flaps of skin. I freaked out. Fast forward 4 months and his ears are completely normal and he is the cutest baby ever.
