This is SO frustrating. |
Jerks!
We like Stoneyfield Farms--hope I can count on them... |
Wal-Mart private label organic milk and Horizon and many other "organics" are factory farmed. Check out the the non-profit Cornucopia Institute's ratings at www.cornucopia.org. They offer comprehensive information about many organic dairy producers. |
So what brand is truly organic? If I want to buy organic I want it to be truly ORGANIC. This is so annoying. |
Thanks for posting that website. Now I know that I have not been getting the organic milk from Trader Joe's that I was intending to buy. Whole Foods does better so I'll go there. |
Sorry -- where did you find that about Trader Joe's? I went to the Cornucopia site and can't find it. Thanks! |
Nevermind -- I found it! |
Target.... Not Trader Joes... |
I looked at this rating site on cornucopia, and actually, Trader Joe's isn't rated that high: http://cornucopia.org/dairysurvey/index.html |
Hi, I posted about Trader Joe's first - they way I read the website is that the milk comes from milk farms and not individual dairies. Anyway, all I meant to state was that I thought I was buying the best milk (organic) for my DD and it turns out that I was mislead. ![]() |
Re: that site, what is the deal with the cow rating? How are they determined? Thanks. |
Unless, I am in a real crunch (its after 10pm and Whole Foods is close), I only buy Organic Valley milk. All the others' claim of being organic are dubious. I also never buy the store brands since there is no way of knowing who actually "makes" them. |
I'm the 15:23 poster who posted the Cornucopia Institute link. To the 17:51 poster, there's an extensive explanation of how the ratings are determined. Look on the site and you'll see it. Like the 17:54 poster, I buy Organic Valley or I buy the Whole Foods private label milk, which is actually supplied by Organic Valley. |
I had read that about Horizon being factory farmed a while back. Honestly, I find that Horizon milk seems to taste a little "saltier" or something versus true organic milk.
I personally like organic milk especially for the flavor, and I think you can really tell a difference between the tastes of the authentic brands. |
Maybe I misread the ABC News article but what I understood was that the milk producer was certified as organic by the USDA and all that has happened is that some private parties have filed a lawsuit alleging that the milk produced was not really organic. The article also cites some problems at the producer, but the USDA did not revoke the organic rating and it sounds like the problems were addressed. Maybe the milk really isn't organic, maybe it is, but a private civil suit is hardly proof of anything. And maybe I am just too cynical, but I would take the Cornucopia Institute's ratings with a grain of salt also since the Institute very clearly has an agenda ("economic justice for the family-scale farming community") that I imagine conflicts with the profit motives of Costco, Target, etc. But probably what you can take from this is if you want true organic products, you can't just go for the cheapest option.
