Sex Offender List-Tell a Friend or Not?

Anonymous
I just happened to notice a sex offender lives close by a friend, same street name.
Do I tell her?

I was checking the list for a home in that zip code since we are interested in buying a home there and saw it.

Of course. Why wouldn't you?

If you were in her shoes, would you want to know?
I most definitely would.

Yes. Why are you even considering NOT telling?????????

Yes, of course!

I guess if your reasoning was buying a house nearby, you have a built in explanation for why you checked. Maybe you could couch your question in those terms. Like, okay, so we were thinking about buying in your neighborhood and I was wondering if you knew anything about the sex offenders list - there is someone nearby.

That said, you do realize that there are sex offenders everywhere, right? When we were buying a house, I could not believe how many sex offenders there were literally everywhere.

Yes, tell her. That being said, there are several sex offenders who live near us. Since their crimes were against adult women, and I have a little boy, I don't worry about it much. I know, I have to keep myself safe too, but I have my wits about me much more than a three year old.

As long as they are registered with the police there is nothing you can do. Do you realize that people can be registered as sex offenders for smacking their kid on the bottom?

I'm sure there are sex offenders in many neighborhoods that aren't on the registry because they haven't been caught yet or moved and didn't register. This is why I think the registries are not all that useful.

This is the stupidest thing I have read in a long time.

Yeah, I'd like to see an example of that. I'm in doubt.

Spoken like a child abuser.

If anything, many offenders plead to a lesser charge to avoid going to trial, particularly with child victims. So don't assume that the conviction always reflects the actual behavior; many sex offenders plead out and prosecutors are okay with that because juries can be tricky to predict.

That being said, there are also people who were convicted of crimes that are no longer crimes, namely gay sex. When I lived in DC there were a number of older men with convictions for public sex or "sodomy" from the 1970s. That's usually pretty clear from the listing.

she probably already knows

I would be annoyed if you told me that.

Think so? You've got a lot to learn. A friend of mine who is divorced has a son who is incorrigible and while with him one weekend started having a temper tantrum because his father wouldn't let him have a light bulb to play with. Kid broke bulb and father had to smack son's bottom to get it away from him. Kid told his mother and mother/ex wife took father to court and he cannot work around children because his idiot ex reported him to authorities and he was put on sex offender list. When you haven't any knowledge about the subject then you should stay out of the conversation so you don't advertise your ignorance..
