IMO these registries are largely useless. They don't accurately reflect either the crime, the person involved, the timing, the issue, the status of the victim (if there was one). They create fear and division in neighborhoods and since there are no neighborhoods that are "safe" from sex offenders what is the point?
If my friend came to me with anecdotal information or an actual account of behavior, I'd be concerned. A nameless faceless bogeyman in the neighborhood who has done something to someone at sometime? Feh. |
I don't believe this story. He probably never gave you all of the information. If the story was that the ex falsely accused him of incest during the custody proceedings, sure - that happens all the time. |
Isn't a CONVICTION/GUILTY PLEA required to be placed on the sex offender list? |
I don't believe it either. There has to be some sexual contact or intent involved. |

Yes, the registry is a record of convictions (either by plea or trial).
And again, those who say "false accusations" of incest happen "all the time"? Don't leave your kids with them. |
Having worked in a family law clinic for a mere six months, I can tell you that allegations of sexual abuse and physical abuse and emotional abuse of children are routinely made by both sides in child custody cases. And they have to be investigated. |
I'm curious - why? |
| The DOJ sex offender registry site will tell you what someone was convicted of. I feel like it is good information to know. A halfway house of sex offenders moved in a few doors down, and honestly, I felt better after checking the registry and seeing that most of their crimes were against adult victims and had taken place in the early 80s. |
I totally agree. I used to be a child abuse investigator in FL (what a messed up state!) and the number of allegations that were made in custody cases were staggering. |
