Full-day Kindergarten in Fairfax County

Anonymous
As I write this, it is late March 2011, and my child is a rising kindergartner in one of the 37 schools in Fairfax County with 1/2 day kindergarten.

I've signed the petition, etc. but what are the odds that the county will find the money in the budget to get full day kindergarten for the 2011-2012 school year? At orientation, the Principal said they would know by May--anyone have more details?

I'm also on this page a lot:

Anyone have more details?

very slim chance that the remaining schools will go to full day. there is just no money in the budget for it and they are looking to cut this year not expand

Slim to none.

I wouldn't count on fall day K for those 37 schools. No money in the budget. I'd make other arrangements if you want your kid in full day K next year...

Agree with both PPs -- there is no money in the budget and most likely will not be funded for next school year.

OP, I think I was at the same meeting as you. I also heard him say that the cost is $8.1m to implement and that the money has to be "found" in the budget. I took that to mean that they would have to take to from other programs to make it happen.

Sorry...not going to happen...

At the Spring Hill Elementary orientation the principal seemed pretty optimistic that they would be full-day in 2011-2012.

I agree with PP. I have heard that asministrators have been visiting and ranking the 37 schools to see which ones will get it first and some will be implemented in 2011-2012 school year.

Barbara Comstock (state senator for McLean/GFs) was instrumental in getting extra $$$ from the state for all day K. If at least some of the McLean schools don't get all day K, there will be some pissed off constituents.

The superintendent is supposed to be implementing it over a 3 year period. I would throw an effing party if it happened next year, as this would make housing decisions for next year a zillion times easier, but I doubt it. I think you are going to see it in a couple schools next year, the ones that are affected by the redistricting most likely, MAYBE a handful of others. But the several neighborhoods we are looking at for possible rental or purchase are all half-day K, which is so bizarre as these are places you can buy a house for below $450K.

Anyway, I'm not holding my breath - my better shot at full-day K is the 2 lottery schools in our area. Otrherwise, I'm going to have to stay in my dinky TH and shell out for parochial school for a year.

If they implement FDK, then that means that it will be at the expense of teachers NOT getting a pay raise. That may be a valid argument, as other Fairfax County employees will not be getting a raise.

The only schools that are being seriously considered for full day k implementation are the ones that are getting kids coming from FDK schools that were affected by the boundary changes caused by the closing of Clifton Elementary.

And even those are questionable. Especially since the county may now need to find the money to refund all the AP testing fees that parents have paid based on the VA Attorney Generals opinion.

As a parent that has been VERY involved in this process, there is absolutely a chance that all 36 remaining schools will get FDK.

Supervisor Hyland put forth a motion to the Board of Supervisors to fuly fund FDK across the county and many of us have been meeting with our Supervisors to vocalize that this is a priority. The budget hearings for the BOS start next Tuesday and there is going to be a rally at 5:30 - https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=193161164057917

If you care about FDK - COME TO THE RALLY!

is anyone bringing their kids to this? because, as is typical, whenever there is an event like this I would like to attend, my husband is going to be out of town and I either have to shell out for a sitter or drag her along. His travel schedule causes me nothing but trouble.

Yes, bringing kids is encouraged to the rally!
