So kids who are say August bday and in the same grade as kids born earlier than August still with their school year, right? If the area school cutoff is 9/1? Is the issue simply that different kids, I guess 2Q, will now be the youngest on the team? Or just that the teams will be mixed up with some different players now?

If your school district starts 9/1 there will be kids born from 8/1-9/1 that are a year older in school but because the soccer SY cutoff date is 8/1 technically they can either be the youngest on a team with kids their grade in school (by playing up) or the oldest by playing on a team with kids a grade below in school.

In this situation ethical clubs will place players on teams with their grade in school. Unethical clubs will allow players to play on teams a grade lower. The problem with this is it screws uo recruiting when players get older.

I get your point but “unethical” isn’t the right word. Clubs will do what’s best for the clubs and allowing an Aug kid to play up with their grade might not make sense for that team and the kids that would be added to it.

I dont agree.

If a club or parent chooses to put their kid on a team with players a grade below them theyre choosing youngers wins over olders college placement. Seems unethical to me to put a kid on a track that's guaranteed to not be successful when other tracks where they can be successful are available.

It seems like every ECNL parent is refreshing the GA instagram as quickly as possible looking for info.

When they announce something you'll know.

This is correct. The other issue is even if one club is ethical crazy parents with aug birthday kids will search out clubs that arent so their kid can be the biggest on the team.

This is why the SY+60 person keeps posting. Its the same thing as SY with an 8/1 cutoff but it eliminates the situation where players can play down on teams where everyone is a grade lower in school.

It's not the same thing. August players don't have to play with their grade. + whatever has two conditions that needed to be met, moving to 8/1 only one condition needs to be met.

Yes there's 2 conditions to be met (birthcert and proof of grade) however once implemented SY+30 with a 9/1 cutoff is the same thing as SY with an 8/1 cutoff.

The difference is under SY+30 with a 9/1 cutoff aug birthdays cant play down on teams that are a grade below them in school.

Everything still works in tournaments etc.

Playing with the other kids in your 1 year age window isn't "playing down." Do you consider the Q1 and Q2 kids right now as playing down because they play with some Q3 and Q4 kids a grade lower in school?

Its bizarre that you cant spell bizarre.

Its also bizarre that you didnt notice that US Club just changed their cutoff date from 9/1 to 8/1 earlier this week. Which obviously shows that decisions are still being made.

Its not about that...

The grouping is called "School Year" because leagues are trying to group players by their grade in school.

Having players a grade older playing down on a team with all players a grade lower defeats the purpose of switching to SY.

Exactly, the entire switch from BY to SY was predicated on that there would be more participation if players from the same grade were on the same teams.

The team below her is not good (~150 ranked) but there are no other clubs that work for our specific situation, so there are girls that are going to get short end of the stick out there.

If your daughter is an August birthday and playing with her grade then that would really suck. If not, in the end it will work out. She will not be the top 1 player on team currently ranked ~150 which she would help drive up and being the best player she will be the one noticed more than the others. Now if it is just about winning and saying you are on a top 25 team then that is different. In the end just make sure she is having fun and it will work out fine.

I am honestly not complaining because we are probably a bit more academically focused regardless and not hitching wagon to college soccer but it will be a developmental hit to her specifically. A prior poster is accurate that it is the club but I do understand the club point of view of strict adherence to eliminate the entitled parent drama.

But there is not a good way to spin it from her development standpoint. Yes, she will be the top player on the younger team but I would 100% rather her be a bench player on Blues than top player on a less developed team. Improvement comes every day in practice going up against other good players and also playing against other top players in competition.

Again, not really complaining just pointing out there will be girls, who are good, that will have their development stunted a bit by this change. Does it matter in the grand scheme of things, probably not.

You have choices. Work together with your club to make the best choice for your player and the team.

The last age change, there weren’t choices. My November kid couldn’t continue to play with her team. She was an A team player forced to join with a bunch of B team players in the grade above her. The reverse age change this time around means that you can continue to play with your team or you can play with what’s most likely your grade level in school. Choices.

But the last "decision" was not presented as an absolute when they said 9/1 - they were really clear they were working through details etc. but I feel like it is now clear that it is decided. I mean I get it, there will always be people that are not happy about whatever is decided.. trust me I have a January kid and a December kid .. but I think its pretty clear what was just decided and published.

I feel like MLSN and GA haven't announced anything yet and that theres likely to be 2-3 more changes yet to happen.

I am admitting that I have not read these pages closely, so I apologize in advance. I cannot find whether ECNL has made an official statement between 8/1 and 9/1. (I think it’s 9/1, but can be wrong.) Will someone kindly update me? Thanks!

The only potential change is going to be what GA and MLSN decide. AYSO/USYS/US Club are decided now and I don't believe it is going to change.
