Social "culture" at Churchill, Wooton, Whitman, BCC, Quince Orchard, etc.

Anonymous
Hello~

Stats can be found on the MCPS website, but obviously don't tell the whole story of a school. We're house hunting in MoCo, and I'm trying to figure out the social environments at the different high schools. I read on GreatSchools.com, for example, that if you're not rich, blonde, and Jewish that you're not going to fit in at Churchill.

Are the high schools in MoCo large enough and diverse enough and well-run enough that a kid will find his/her niche eventually, or is there some truth to the "snobby" reputations of some MoCo high schools in the higher income areas?

Please give me the scoop on what it's really like for the students who go to these schools! Thanks!

BCC is one of the more diverse schools. Also Blair.

I've heard that WJ also has a good well-rounded mix of students. Gossip (this board) indicates that Wooten and Whitman are both pressure cookers - Wooten has a high Asian population for whatever that's worth. Other Whitman has a rep for being lots of rich kids.

Wooton grad here from a LONG time ago. Whitman even back 20 years ago was considered very much more high pressure than Wooton. Wooton never felt high pressure to me. I do remember it being a mix of white, asian and indian mostly. I would venture to guess that demographic has not changed much.

Wootton is NOT snobby or high pressure. But the culture is to succeed, be involved and do well. I would call it a supportive and pleasant acceptance of excellence, but definitely not a pressure cooker.

I'm Asian American and went to Churchill. I fit in very well there. That of course was years ago but can't imagine it's changed that much.

Speaking as an asian, Churchill is very "brown". It is surprising how many asians (incl. all asians, middle eastern and indian, here) and hispanics there are. It's the rare blonde that happens along. A glance at the sports website is enlightening.

Coed and boys volleyball - all asian
cheerleaders - mostly caucasian
ice hockey - mostly caucasian
football - mostly causcasian and african american
boys basketball - same
girls basketball - mostly caucasian
baseball - mixed
track - very heterogenous
soccer - mixed
la crosse - mostly caucasian
golf - caucasian

The kids that hang out in the library at lunch? Asians
kids playing basketball in gym at lunch - african american and caucasian boys

I don't know where I'm going with all this except to say that stereotypes are alive and well at this school.

I have posted before about Whitman but it has been a great experience for us. It is high achieving but I can't say my child feels excessively pressured (although 11th grade can be a much tougher year depending on how many APs you take). He's taking challenging courses and getting good grades. I have also found it to be quite diverse, at least from an international perspective. Not so diverse from an economic perspective, but he's got plenty of friends who work after school or on weekends so it's not a total culture of privilege. There are tons of opportunities to participate in clubs, sports, debate, etc. The older kids can do internships, including at places like NIH.

Went to Whiteman -not a typo
B-CC has the diversity from Silver Spring
Churchill would be all white and asian if not for Scotland-PP forgot the tennis team, all asian
Wooton-sort of lost in the middle but a good school-crappy sports
QO-mix of everything -great football-they don't compete well in expensive sports like golf or hockey

QO--lots of diversity but it is a very "have, have not" culture that is socioeconomically segregated. A harder place to be a "smart" kid out in the open. A good place to be an athlete.

QO- academics nowhere near the other choices

That's just the sort of thing some stuck-up bitch from Potomac would say to justify her family's big mortgage payment. QO is a great school even if it's not as exclusive as snooty Churchill or Whitman or as Asian as "Wonton."

Ouch! Potomac mom here that lives in "normal-sized" house. Those houses up in Darnestown are much bigger than ours. Anyway, Churchill is definitely not the end all be all of schools around here. Just say'in.

I'm 19:10 and I'm an MCPS administrator. I have nothing to gain or lose by posting- just stating the truth from working with LOTS of teachers in the county.
