Self cleaning oven -- no
Dryer -- maybe not a good idea Washing machine -- maybe not a good idea either? Dishwasher -- ok? Crockpot -- should be alright, right? Anything else? |
| Crockpot only. The rest are fire or water damage hazards. I've had both washing machines and dishwashers leak tremendous amounts of water with no warning. |
| Our dishwasher motor burned out on us and started smoking. We were quite glad we were home as this is one appliance I never thought to be afraid of. |
| Dryer fires are leading cause of fires in the home. Definitely turn off. There was a long thread about this a year or two ago. |
| I was just wondering abt this yesterday. The outside of my crockpot gets HOT! Is this normal? Or does it mean I have a crappy crockpot? |
|
I've left the crockpot on. If I'm going on a short trip, sometimes I'll toss in a load of laundry or start the dishwasher before I leave.
I guess the washer and dishwasher could be a hazard if they flood for any reason. I know our dishwasher will stop automatically if there's an electrical issue so I don't worry too much about that. |
I leave everything on! I run driers, washing machines, dishwashers, crock pots! I don't have enough hours at home to do things while I'm there. Thanks for the info.

I like you. Living on the edge.

Another wild woman here! And, that is not the worst of it -- sometimes I drink wine. |
Do you stay up past 9pm? That would really be reckless! |
| OMG I feel so naughty... I left the dryer on and wen to buy wine at 9:30pm! |
Me three. |
| I know the chances of anything happening are small, but when I was growing up my neighbor's house burnt down while they were at work- they determine the cause was a piece of tupperware that fell to the bottom of the dishwasher It melted during the drying phase and caused an electrical fire. That was in the 80s, and god knows how old the dishwasher was but I don't leave anything on while I'm out of the house. |
| I once had a washing machine motor burn out which started a fire INSIDE THE MACHINE while I was running a load of laundry! water + electricity + fire = very, very glad I was home. |
| Last year (2010), I was home with my brand new Maytag Bravos dryer on which had been purchased less than 6 months before. I went into the laundry room and was met with a blast of blazing hot air. The outside of the machine was hot enough to almost burn me touching it. The clothes inside were still wet. Long story short - the repair man said if I hadn't been there it would have kept going until a fire started. There was a problem with the fan belt which helps the air ciculate in the dryer. If the air isn't moving, the temp gauge is useless so the "auto" shutoff if it gets too hot would not work. I don't leave anything on anymore... |
