Least Unhealthy Packaged Snack for Kids (that they will eat)

Anonymous
What is a good snack for the car for my kids - that they will eat. They like pop tarts and quaker granolla bars both of which seem unhealthy. My kids are picky and 6, 3 and 3.

We eat bars from Trader joe's (I know, I know) that are fake healthy -- they are the granola type bars, not the fruit-filled ones which are no better than Poptarts. They also eat nuts willingly; they love the small bags of individually wrapped cashews from TJ's. Also navel oranges and clementines which are messy for the car but work.

Not great, but we do Kids Clif bars, Nutigrain bars, cheerios, raisins, goldfish packs, train mix (I put in baggies), gogurt, uncrustables...

kids are 5y old twins.

Make your own trail mix, this way you control the healthy aspect. You can also add in a few sweets if the kids have been good

Kashi bars are healthier, but any bar like that tends to be a little higher in sodium/sugar.

smart food popcorn. My kids adore it. It's a bit messy but I just give them wipes to clean their hands off with afterward.

Dried fruit/veggies - strawberry, banana, peas, corn, etc.

Dried strawberries, mangos, and bananas (but they're super expensive); yogurt; regular apples and bananas.

Yes, all these snacks worked when DC's were young and sheltered. Now that they are teens and have been exposed to WAY more unhealthy food it is a much bigger challenge. You should hear them complain about all the "healthy food" in the house. How come we don't have chips and things like all their friends? So, I'm up for suggestions.

Would Veggie or Terra chips work? The original flavor Sunchips are also pretty good. There's also a brand called Food Should Taste Good (not kidding!) that makes an awesome multgrain chip. They sell them at Costco.

To OP - agree re make-your-own trail mix - I mix a few kinds of healthy cereals (like cheerios and barbara's oat squares), small pretzels, popcorn and a small amount of craisins and choco chips. Then I put in indiv baggies for snacks on the go. Other on the go snacks are go-gurts (I get the organic ones), bananas, lowfat cheese sticks. If I have a minute I will put some whole wheat crackers in a bag with small cheese slices and tell my kids to make cracker/cheese sandwiches in the car. I have carb-lovers (they get it from me!).

To parent of teens - In HS my friends and I used to love dipping potato chips in onion dip. You could try health versions of this - put out some fresh crunchy veggies like carrot stick along with baked potato chips. Then make a healthy dip like an onion dip made with yogurt, or even guacamole - it would be great if you teach your teens how to male the dips and leftism doctor the recipes as they wish!
