Private & Independent Schools

I will speak with the head of school at DS's preschool over the summer, but I wanted to ask advice on the boards as well. DS will be 4 in May and he goes to a preschool well-known in NOVA that sends kids every year to the VA privates and a few to DC/MD.
We are interested in a private school education K-12 and are willing to "redshirt" him if schools suggest it. However, I'm confused about how to go about this. We can't just apply to one school because of the significant chance he won't get in and some of the schools may only want him as a 1st grader-- and 1st isn't usually an entry year so we'd be out of luck, anyway. Any insight? Thanks so much! |

Apply where you will for whatever grade you want. The ADs will sort it out. If you and his teachers think he is ready for K, then apply for K. The ADs will let you know if that is appropriate based on a variety of metrics.
Most May birthdays won't be asked to redhsirt though. Such a line is often pushed by the parents. |
| What about an early June birthday? |
| I have the same question...my DD has an August birthday, she will be entering Pk4 (Montessori) in the fall 2011. In 2012, we will be applying at "Big 3s" for K. After reading the posts, maybe we should apply for PK4 because she will be a very young 5 entering K. |
| PP - you should apply for K, but mention that you are willing to consider the grade admission feels you child is ready to enter |
| May bday here, just admitted to a great NOVA private. Nothing was said about age. |
Boy or girl? |
| Girl. |
| Apply for the correct year. Your son is just 2/3 of the way into the age spread for that grade, assuming a Sept cutoff. I seriously doubt that any school would suggest redshirting. He may end up being one of the younger boys, but he'll be fine and it's unlikely that he'll be the youngest in the class. FWIW, my son's birthday is the very end of April and no one ever suggested redshirting. He started this year at our top choice school. |

Late June boy on time at a "big 3." Zero mention of red-shirting.
If your child is developing normally, do not hold back. Red-shirt only if you think that your child is developmentally delayed. |
| We just applied for our early June boy and requested either PK or K. We just wanted him to fit in with his peers, whatever that may be at whichever particular school. Some/most schools looked at him for PK and one looked at him for K. |
| We held back. The school he is going to has a JK cut off that makes all the kids coming from the JK program at that school all older. He would have been the youngest in the class. He has absolutely no issues. Just don't want my son being the youngest for a variety of non academic reasons. Definitly a personal choice. |
| Have one boy and one girl (twins) with June bday. Waitlisted for K at one school which is K-8 and Pre-K at our first choice (a big 3). Seems to be mostly due to social issues for boy, no issues with intellectual capability. Anyone face this or have any advice? Hate to hold back for no reason if it comes to that. Will speak to Pre-K school about their decision, particularly with regard to the girl. Not willing to split them gradewise. |
| I think it is really dependent on the child -- we held one DS back a year and one was ready; both born in spring. The preschool director and teacher really helped us decide. |
| Are you talking about twins PP? |
