What's your Plan B if you are shut out

Just wondering what folks are planning to do if they get shut out of the lottery?

wait

A combination of waiting and applying for preschools that may be less competitive (Little Flower Montessori, First Baptist, etc.)

I have worked out my estimates on my twins' odds in getting into the 6 lottery schools (either in with the lottery or a very good waitlist number). I only applied to one school where their odds are extremely low. Having twins helps our odds. I think their odds at getting in or having an extremely high lottery number at one of our top 5 schools are 80%. Assuming things are stable from last year.

I put a sure bet (in boundary, not popular school) as our 6th choice. We're also applying to Appletree which I think is also a sure bet. We don't want to pay for daycare or preschool next year.

Applying to more charters.

Anyone who think lottery results are the be all end all is in for disappointment. This is a fluid process. Hit all the charters, and then maybe the private preschools, but don't think if you get shut out that life as you know it is over. Most people I know got in to places over the summer. There are very few who are relieved and happy when lottery results come out.

Indeed. I have never heard of people not getting in somewhere eventually. Hedge your bets with places like Easter Seals and Centronia Universal PreK, which offer free slots for 3/4 year olds, plus Bridges and Appletree. You'll get in somewhere; it will be nerve-wracking, but you WILL get in somewhere.

I am certain DS will get in somewhere, but I'm looking forward to the lottery to show me where our best chances are. I would prefer not to wait till August to know but recognize this is a realy possibility.

We're applying for preK in OOB and charters. If we don't get anything we like, we can do another year at the private preschool we're in now.

If we're shut out next year, we'll think longer and harder about our in-boundaries school and if the gut says no, then we'll move to the 'burbs. What else is there, with a HHI of $100k?

This happened to us last year. We got a spot at Bridges 3 weeks before school started, ended up being a blessing in disguise. If we get shut out again, we will stay at Bridges again.

we're in a JKLM school for PK. If we get shut out of our local school and the other 5 we've applied to we'll hope for success at a charter. Last resort is paying for another year at our current preschool (13K).

keep in contact over the summer. we got shut out and terrible waitlists numbers. we kept in contact with two or three of the schools and got a space at the end of the summer in our 2nd choice school. very exciting. also, community academy public charter school (butler campus at 5 thomas circle) is pretty good for ps.

You do not need to keep in touch - they are required to work the list in order. Make sure your contact information is accurate and you might have a short window to accept / decline a spot over the summer / into the fall.

Last year for preK we were called in mid-Oct for a spot for Murch.

they don't work the list in order all of the time. again, i would say keep in contact and let them know you are still interested.

I hear frequent stories about schools not following the lists in order - definitely best to keep in touch
