Curious to know how essential is determined? I can see some security positions, but what else? I've read "medical and emergency care, public health and safety, air traffic control, border surveillance, law enforcement and protection of federal prisons," but I've also read that the CDC practically shut down (so much for public health). What about DOJ prosecutors (law enforcement--do indictments get placed on hold?)

| I hope I'm non essential and DH is essential so we can pay the bills and I can clean the house really well and have some great kid time! |
| My DH is essential. He's an FBI Agent. I think his biggest concern is doing without the support staff...like his wonderful secretary. |
| I'm not essential and DH only works part time in order to take care of our SN kids. We're going to have stop therapies in order to have money to pay the mortgage. |

I asked this at work - I work in the National Security field- and I was told "We are not preparing for a government shut down at this time."
|
| I doubt my husband is (IT) and we are screwed in case of a shut down. We don't have any money saved because we have been paying off bills for the past 2 years - my husband is horrible managing money and thinks if you use a credit card the bill "magically disappears". So, I took charge of our finances since April 2009 when "we" had $30.000 in debit and confiscated all his credit cards and put them in the freezer. Now, we "only" have one bill left in the amount of 6k and I was planning on using the tax return to pay it off since we will have to start paying his student loans in the next month or April. So, in case of a shutdown, we will probably have to use part of the tax return to pay essential bills, such as mortgage. |
My DH is an FBI agent as well and I work with FBI on a day to day basis. The wonderful secretary comment made me laugh. Your DH is very lucky! I hope he shows his appreciation to his secretary. |
| PP here. I have no idea if I am essential. Presumably DH (FBI agent) is, but they may not have all agents report. I hope we don't have to deal with this. |
| No one has told me if I am essential or not, but for those worried about paying bills - I have been told that last time everyone still got paid on time. . . |
| My DH is also FBI (SSG) and may be essential but this isn't 100% clear. I'm quite sure my position isn't essential, which sucks since I make more money than he does. |
I thought everyone received back pay, meaning they were not paid on time but eventually paid. I hope this is the case if there is a shut down because I make the majority of the income and I am fairly certain that my position is not essential. |
| My buddy who is in with the Repugg's big cheeses told me it was very unlikely that they would agree to back pay on this occasion, so I wouldn't hold my breath. |
It would cause a revolt if they did backpay right now. It is hard to justify paying people when they are at home sitting on their buttocks. It is different if everyone is working, but how can you tell taxpayers they are going to reimburse people for doing nothing? |
Then they should try really hard to avoid a shut-down. |
You are right. And from what is being said, there won't be a shutdown. |
