| how often do you get deliveries, and what is on your standing delivery list? I know people rave about their stuff and I'd like to try it, but from what I can tell our regular delivery would just be milk and eggs; I'd throw in meats and cheeses every now and then, maybe butter, but would still be making regular trips to whole foods and safeway. How do you incorporate their stuff into your routine? TIA! |

We've been using SMC for milk, egg, and yogurt delivery. The milk is great especially because it comes in glass bottles--less worry about leaching chemicals. Also, because we often walk to our neighborhood grocery store, not having to haul milk helps significantly with the load. With eggs, you don't have to worry about eggs cracking on the walk home--also they are a small creamery, so their eggs were not part of that national recall a few months ago.
As for the yogurt, DH likes it, so we order seven a week in different flavors. It's slightly runny, so if you like really thick yogurt, it's not for you. |
| We get just milk about 90% of the time-- occasionally butter or something else. The two biggest reasons we do it is that we feel better about supporting a small local dairy and convenience. Like PP we do a lot of spur of the moment/neighborhood shopping and not having to deal with having to buy milk, much less carry it home, gives us a lot more flexibility. We do pay for that convenience though... |
| I get milk and eggs every week. On every other week we get butter and 1/2 and 1/2. |
| OP here - thanks and would love to hear from others. A couple more questions - does the milk keep for longer than a week, at least if unopened? (we go through more than a 1/2 gallon but less than a gallon per week). And, anyone know what day they deliver to Northwest DC (chevy chase)? Thanks. |
Not sure if the milk lasts more than a week, but SMC delivers to us in CC DC on Monday mornings. |
I would say it keeps more than a week unopened. I think we generally use a little less than a gallon a week, although it varies. We order a gallon a week, and often we have three half gallons in the fridge (one open, two unopened). Occasionally we have had 4, in which case I skip an order and try to remember to open the oldest first, and sometimes we run out entirely, in which case I buy some at CVS (and hope I don't have to skip the following week's order )

| I would say that it lasts a little longer than a week, but not much at least for skim. |
| New Poster here - my SMC delivery starts tomorrow - I know I need to provide a cooler - do they bring it wrapped in anything? or should I also put ice in it? (I realize not as critical tomorrow, but am thinking towards summer) |
|
You should put ice in the cooler. They just drop the milk bottles in. The only packaging is maybe a plastic bag if you have ordered cream cheese or something small.
The milk does last more than a week. We only get regular deliveries every two weeks so our milk has to last that long. |
| They have expirations on the labels but it's usually good for another two to three days afterwards. We get 7 bottles a week!! (lot of milk drinkers in our family). We get thevyummy cream cheese every third week. We occasionally get bread, eggs, Butter and yogurt. The meats have been very good (we generally wait for sales). |
|
The milk will last up to two weeks as long as you store it in the main part of the fridge, not on the door (lower temperature).
We get milk and eggs every week; butter, bread, and all kinds of meat as needed. |

We have used them for over a year. We get full milk and skim, and eggs every week. Also yogurt. We have a freezer full of thier meat as well!
The only thing I don't like is the heavy whipping cream, it seems to go bad very quickly, and the same with the buttermilk. I also don't like the bread, it tastes a little stale/hard/frozen sometimes. I don't drink milk but we get 4 1/2 gallons a week and a 1/2 gallon of the skim for cooking/coffee. We have the metal box on our porch, and during the summer pack it with the blue freezer packs. |
| Hi all - I am the new poster from above and we just got our first delivery - the milk has an expiration of 3/1/2011 for whomever asked that. . .I just tried to pour the milk into my coffee and it dripped everywhere - do I need to buy one of those spout things? I had assumed they would cause the milk to go bad sooner. |
| definitely get the spout thingy. Not sure why it would cause the milk to go bad sooner? (also the little cap is easier to get on and off than the cap the milk comes with) |
