McLean is not even on the FCPS renovation/ expansion list. It is worse than FCPS “not caring.” Most of the current school board are extremely “woke.” They are only marginally less radical than the prior SB. A majority of them hate McLean, because in their view, McLean benefits from “unearned Asian and white privilege.” |
Even if McLean HS were reduced to a set of rundown trailers, it would still remain a top school. Woke board could redirect all the funds to improve the facilities at lower-performing schools, but those schools would likely still struggle. Why? Because it's the students who make a school top-ranked, not the buildings.

Sure, if by woke you mean they aren't MAGAs. |
Woke would mean extreme maga, but on the opposite side |
There was a lawsuit filed by parents of Asian students. They won, initially. The Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, reversed. After that, the parents sought certiori to the S.Ct. Unlike the misinformation distributed by FCPS, the county DID NOT “WIN” AT THE SUPREME COURT LEVEL. The court denied certiori, which they can do for myriad reasons. Those reasons are rarely divulged. For all we know, the Court agreed with the Asian parents claim FCPS unlawfully discriminated against TJ applicants on the basis of race. IMO, what FCPS has done is, at best, employ “proxies” for race, meaning FARMS kids are more likely to be URMs (LatinX / Black), and that capping the big 3 at 1.5% would more likely yield kids from MS with fewer Asian / Indian kids. Using proxies can achieve the same or similar racial outcomes, but it would allow FCPS to make misleading claims it did not directly consider race (not individually, anyway). |
It would be quite a staggering indictment of this Court if they believed that the petitioner in a very high-profile case was in the right on a matter of civil rights and declined to hear the case. The far more likely explanation is that the petitioners didn't do enough to make their case for anyone other than Alito and Thomas. |
McLeanMomma!!! You're back!!!!! I've missed you. |
"Hate" is too strong a word here, and I think you'll be unable to provide a link to a document where any member of the School Board stated that McLean benefits from "unearned Asian and white privilege." They could have prioritized an addition to McLean, but they didn't want to do anything that could have been criticized as favoring McLean. So they didn't. Instead, the school gets a series of under-the-radar spot repairs that don't get much attention (a few new labs, a resurfaced gym, updated bathrooms, new flooring, refinished parking lots, and most recently money for roof repairs). And it will surely be fairly high up the next renovation queue whenever that comes out. |
???? I am not that person. |
Once the case got in front of a real judge they laughed it out of court. |
Woke judge doesn't know anything better. Who cares! |
Hi OP! I agree with everything you wrote. And I can relate, both as the parent of two Longfellow students (one of whom is a freshman at TJ). The part you wrote about being Asian from a traditional feeder is now a disadvantage (the part in bold) is especially true. The prior FCPS school board (which is much like the current board, ideologically), had “racial equity” as its number one goal. But their vision for the future did not include Asian or Indian kids have any opportunity to do well in FCPS. The school board views Asians and Indian kids as “benefitting from unearned Asian privilege.” It is obvious from the way they act (and their emails, which had to be FOIA’d as part of the lawsuit). The emails were extremely racist against Asian students. The best explanation of the “unearned Asian privilege” comes from another poster on DCUM, who put it this way: “Asian privilege refers to the advantages that Asian American students gain from their parents' strong commitment to education. Whether they are white-collar professionals working in Reston or scraping dishes at a restaurant in Falls Church or washing clothes at dry cleaners in Herndon, Asian parents invest significant time and energy to ensure their children succeed academically. This often involves working long hours, taking on extra jobs, and sacrificing their own leisure time. In many cases, one parent—usually the mother—may choose not to work or quit her job entirely to focus on supervising their FCPS student, allowing them to concentrate on their studies. The values of hard work, self-improvement, and a love of learning are instilled in their student from a young age, reinforcing the belief that education is the path to a successful life. A parent might even forgo buying a new winter coat to save money for their children's Kumon fees. All of this is motivated by the hope that their children will achieve better grades, gain admission to good universities, and ultimately break the cycle of poverty, creating a better life than their parents had.“ In any event, FCPS has proven itself to be lead by an increasing racist group, including Reid, Gatehouse, and the school board. |
Despite having the freedom to select students based on race for last four consecutive years, FCPS has concluded that the majority of top STEM talent overwhelmingly comes from Asian American students. However, the troubling issue is why FCPS is restricting the number of Asian students to a set percentage.

That is misinformation, but you knew that. As for the denial of certiori, it is more likely the Court felt the issue was already addressed by Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard, and therefore best resolved by application of existing precedent rather than a decision specifically addressing selective race-based admission to a small number of public high schools, such as TJ. |
Asian admissions were at historic highs. The group that benefited most from the changes was Asians. The largest cohort at TJ is Asian. They couldn't show harm done, which was summarily laughed out of court. |
