I had just come in from a 12 hour night shift at the hospital. I was really worried because the charter school lottery didn't pan out well for us. If DC didn't get into at least one of the four private schools we applied to and get a substantial amount of financial aid DC was headed to the crappy neighborhood school. Notifications were all by either email or portal. I kept refreshing my gmail account. The first email came. Happiness quickly turned into dispare. Admitted, no financial aid. Then another email. Admitted, not enough aid. My dreams were quickly fading. Checked a portal. Punch to the gut. Rejected. How dare they (stupid green kids holding hands)? They would be lucky to have my DC. Then an email from our top choice -- Congratulations it said!!! My heart was pounding! I called DH. He asked, "and the aid?" I realized I didn't know. There was no mention of it. Sadness crept over me. I refreshed again. Another email! I opened it...and there it was, in black and white...A POT OF GOLD! We had been offered the amount of aid we needed to make this life line a reality! DC was spared the crappy DCPS education being handed out in the ghettos of DC and was headed to Big 3! I couldn't wait to watch DC navigate the organized chaos that awaited!

I was wrinkling my nose in distaste after seeing a black boy in a hoodie walking around my gated community--don't know how he got in! I reached through the window of my Volvo SUV into my mailbox, and there it was! My child's achievement, which I took for myself, as I have nothing of my own going on in my life.
