NP. Actually it makes a lot of sense. I suspect a lot of small SLACs are quietly terminating contracts with small local businesses after this. It’s just too risky. |
Or you could choose not to blindly support shoplifters. |
But that would mean giving in. Comrades, let's fight the patriarchy, let's fight capitalism, let's fight the white race, let's fight biology, let's fight your mother! |
| White is wrong and black is right. Don’t forget it. |
Probably only the white-owned ones. Black owned local businesses are okay. |
Maybe Oberlin should become an agricultural college and farm its own food? |
The PP doesn't have any idea what she's babbling about. She seems unaware that Oberlin accused a well-respected family of "racism" - when there was none. |
Or, you know, the colleges could simply educate their staff and students about what is NOT racism. For instance, shoplifting is a crime, regardless of what race you are.

Is this satire? I certainly hope so. |
| What should the business have done instead, served a plate of scones and tea to the shoplifter? |
Absolutely! Upon seeing a black student use a fake ID and blatantly shove two bottles of wine into his jacket, the owner should have asked him if he'd like a bag for his "purchases" and perhaps some appetizers to go with it. Instead, he dared to call him out and then chase him! The nerve. |

If anyone wants to read an unbiased, fact-based analysis of the case that does not include political overtures, this is the best thing I've seen:
https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/gibson-s-v-oberlin-college-how-false-6341044/ What's wild to me is that the jury and the court additional holds Oberlin responsible for the statement published by the Student Senate. So even if the Oberlin admin wasn't involved at all, because the Student Senate defamed Gibson's the university would still be on the hook. This is troubling for a number of reasons. |
Thanks for the link, did you read it? It's pretty well reasoned why actions by the student Senate was linked to Oberlin admin. The student Senate derives it's authority from Oberlin, and Oberlin has oversight over the student Senate. |
This. And also move somewhere in Alaska where it is not stealing indigenous land. |
DP. But the consequence of this will be that colleges in Ohio need to crack down on student activities and exercises of free speech by students involved in those activities so that the college will not be held legally responsible for students’ statements. Editorials in the student newspapers, speaker invitations by campy political groups, and expression of speech will need to be filtered the administration first to make sure it is the “correct” kind of speech. That will be a pretty big hit for the campus Republican groups who have been fighting hard for freedom to invite controversial speakers for organization events. |
