Oberlin College ordered to post $36 million bond to delay Gibson’s Bakery collection of Judgment

1. We have way too many people here (or a few very prolific posters) who either don't read linked articles or don't comprehend what they read.

2. We have way too many people here who have no concept of law and what is legal and what is illegal. To those who opine whether "white" is a protected group.... Good God people.
You are protected from different treatment on the basis of your race, whether you are White, Black, or some other race. You don't have to have gone to law school to know this.

Study, people.

Liberal arts graduates from schools like Oberlin.
I hired one and fired her two months later. The most annoying POS, and I will never hire another

Oberlin has a billion dollar endowment and an increasing supply of people who will pay $80,000 a year to get their weakling kid out of their house.
The funniest accusation by Oberlin was that the employee who chased the shoplifters from the bakery was trained in martial arts and used excessive force in pursuing them.

Speaking of irony.

From what I recall the factual evidence on racism were police records showing that Gibson’s did not disproportionately accuse black customers of theft.

Oberlin’s counter presentation of facts could have been that Gibson’s did disproportionately call the police on black customers but that was not the case.

Some statements from students and professors about their feelings is just opinion and not probative.

I do think the amount will be carved down - it’s just not in the public interest to impose costs like that on nonprofit educational institutions.

Supposedly the bakery called on whites approximately 70% of the time. Surprised Oberlin attorneys didn’t ask for the breakdown of the “whites”. “Whites” include Hispanic from Mexico, Central America, and South America, Muslims, SE Asians (Pakistanis, Indians), and Northern Africans. Once you get a breakdown, you can get a better picture of whether the bakery was targeting minorities.

Maybe the college students should stop the shoplifting? Geez.

Bingo.

I guess you two Jesus freaks stayed dry in college when underage. Get a life.

From the first page: "in 2017, the ‘Culture of Theft’ was even discussed fondly in the school’s magazine. One local bookstore owner said that she loses $10,000 a year in stolen goods to Oberlin students."

And the issue is whether the bakery is racist or not, targeting minorities while giving free passes to white shoplifters. As I understand it, this is what Oberlin students were objecting to. If you want to discuss this, bring it on.

That is what Oberlin argued, but the courts overruled the college. That is why they awarded punitive damages to the bakery. If you want to organize a class action to appeal the ruling, many lawyers would happily take your money. Or you could recognize that the United States still follows the rule of law.

Yea, the employee was even armed with shoes!

The shoplifter and his beat down bros are poised for leadership roles in any liberal city in the country

Schools like Oberlin are the vanguard of progressive-liberalism thought. These are your thoughts leaders and have demonstrated to you what they are willing to do to anyone who don't comply.

If I was an administrator at a SLAC with an active student body, I’d be taking a hard look at my contracts with local vendors right now. Lot of MAGAs might be viewing this case as a ticket to getting rich. Better to just go straight to the Syscos and Aramarks of the world and avoid any local business that might be involved in altercations with my students.

If you were an administrator at a SLAC (which you aren’t and never will be), it would be wiser for you to be taking a hard look at your fellow administrators and student body, making sure they understand the concept of “false accusations”. Oh, and that if they shoplift, regardless of their race, they will be prosecuted.

Just a thought.

Yea but large companies like Sysco are not green enough, they don't do "farm to table", and they certainly aren't confirming to the DEI mission of a progressive institution. I mean, Sysco's CEO is a hetero-normative white male.

That makes no sense.
