Why can't people give up Michael Jackson?

Anonymous
I think we have learned a lot more about abuse and how abusers work in a way we didn't realize before. I remember when the allegations came out, I was a young child and remember thinking that he settled and that was suspicious. And then when the new accusations came out years later, I assumed the parents where out for money, cause why would you allow a sleep over with this man after the first round of allegations.

Now we watch documentaries like Abducted in Plain Sight, and wonder how in the hell did you not see...but that is how abusers work! We have learned over the years that they operate and thrive on our naivete. The common threads between these 2 new accusers, their lives and experiences, and how their families bought into everything. It is all too common, for anyone who watched and don't find these two men credible, I worry for you ability to empathize with your fellow man.

4 young men have stood up and said what this man did to them, believe whatever you want but I believe victims and they deserve to be heard- not silenced and shamed by MJ's estate and fans

Why didn’t you feel icky before the documentary? These allegations aren’t new.

I’m not the pp in the band but this also rings true for me. Maybe I was too young to understand the allegations before. Maybe now that I have kids it makes me sick to know what happened. I watched the documentary and I was a huge huge fan of MJ. Now I change the radio station when he comes on. I’m only sorry I didn’t understand this sooner.

+1. I don’t follow celebrity news much, so headlines about his acquittal based on false testimony probably had undue influence. Also, before I had kids I didn’t know anything about how pedaphiles operate, like grooming their victims and families, etc. After watching Robson and Safechuck’s detailed, hours-long interviews, it was impossible for me to ignore what they said.

This is spot on. After The Penn State and USA gymnastics scandals, I think we, as a society, understand a lot more about how predators commit and get away with such abuse.

Again, these allegations aren’t new. There have been shows that made fun of the allegations for years. Only a person living under a rock wouldn’t know MJ was creepy. It’s a shame that ppl needed a documentary to sway them and for MJ to die so he couldn’t defend himself. That’s the reason ppl are defending MJ. He’s dead so basically anyone can say anything they want.

I’m rolling my eyes at the ppl claiming now that they hate MJ. You didn’t care before when the victims were actual kids.

This.

This is not a difficult answer and it is the correct one. His music IS great. Objectively great. And it is also the soundtrack of most of my childhood and adolescence. But, he's a pedophile A bad one. So, that's a no for me from here on out.

Creepy does not equal pedophile. And there are many reasons why it's different. We now have a more formed picture of what he did rather than rumors and unsubstantiated legal challenges.

Not sure why you're being so pissy about it.

Not sure why you are making excuses about waiting until a heavily biased documentary came out to form an opinion.

Good grief, pp says she wishes she’d understood sooner. What else do you want?

In MJ case creepy did equate to pedophile. Plenty of information came out during the case and subsequent years. I remember talking about the little boy describing MJ penis. The documentary didn’t really shed much new light if you actually listened to and read about the case.

I’m the pp in the band and echo what others have said in this response. When the first allegations came out I was a kid and didn’t really follow or understand the gravity of the situation. When the second one came out I was in high school and thought maybe he really was just misunderstood. The documentary and Oprah special following explained to me so much about sexual abuse and changed my mind.

Look Charlie Brown, it’s ridiculous that the excuse is, well I didn’t understand that sleeping in a bed with children isn’t ok. The ppl being swayed by a heavily biased documentary are the ppl who follow anything like sheep. There was way too much information out there to decide that now you hate MJ.

So why worry now about people boycotting him or not? If that shark has jumped, ship has sailed, whatever, what differnce does it make? He’s dead. He’s not making any money. Why the brimfire NOW, instead of years ago?

Exactly. Why now? It’s faux outrage.

Several previous posters keep claiming the accusers are not benefiting financially. Although neither was payed to appear in the documentary, both are appealing the courts’ dismissals of their claims against the Jackson estate.

The whole situation is sad but we should not pretend that these gentleman have nothing to gain by going public and putting out the documentary.
