Most people don't care about diversity they want the best school period which is why better schools have housing that is more expensive

All of you arguing otherwise would have bought in the best school district but you can't afford it

You can argue if the school is better or is it because the kids are better... I would argue schools don't do much good or bad, it's the raw material kids coming in that matter and again all else being equal people buy to get around the best raw material kids that they can afford

...you're talking about wealthier children being better children than poorer children...

yeah if you have a choice of a class with high SES kids or low SES kids what would you do lol again this is born out by housing prices

I would choose an area where people don't think that people with more money are better people than people with less money.

lol and you are sacrificing the quality of education for your child idiot

I find it humorous the pretzels all of you are twisting yourselves in to convince yourselves you are providing the best education options for your children. All so you can sleep at night lol

The only hypocrisy is the pampered and entitled jerks who expect everything for their children but begrudge the less fortunate the same opportunities.

Such places don't actually exist. It's a false narrative that's been promoted so often but the facts just don't bear it out.

wah wah how about you work harder and get more money so you can buy into a better pyramid

Serious for a second. You can rent or get a condo in the top pyramids. No reason why anyone can't do that. Asians generally do this to get into the best pyramids even when they aren't making that much money and then people wonder why Asians are doing so well it's because they value education the most.

But we're not like other parts of the country. We are one county and we have poor schools, rich schools, and those in between in this one county. We've already established that schools with a high number of poor kids are not good for all students at the school; regardless of what the school does or what programs are established at that school. WHy would school vouchers be a burden to other schools as long as they don't significantly drive up the FARM rates and cause overcrowding?

School vouchers would not be a burden to other schools. They would be a burden to PEOPLE. You know how affluent people on DCUM don't want their kids going halfway across the county with school-provided transportation? Now imagine how poor people would get their kids halfway across the county without school-provided transportation.

And they don't even work in terms of the math. There are 57,000 very poor kids in MCPS. Is there room for 57,000 additional kids in the schools in Bethesda and Potomac?

The same way poor and rich private school kids and DC charter school kids get to school: parents drive, carpool, mass transit.
It works. 8am start across the board helps as well.

MoCo is not DC, there is no mass transit in Potomac. Just saying.
And parents 'who drive' their children are those who don't have to be at work at 7 am.

I don't get why everyone loves W schools so much

Our DD is very happy at our DCC school

Not only has she taken many AP courses, she has become surprisingly comfortable with a shank in her hand - has yet to lose a single knife fight. So proud

My kid reported that a friend said her parents wouldn't let her go to a middle school in Germantown because there are gangs and she might get pregnant. It wasn't clear whether the friend knew how you get pregnant.

I don’t think it is hypocritical at alll. Of course I want my high achieving kids in a strong cohort - so we are in a diverse area and yes it may mean in their classes they are mainly with kids from similar families to us though of course there is still some diversity.

But we value other things too. We value public transportation and walkable community- like being around farmers markets etc. we wouldn’t have that if we moved further out.

LOL! How about this- tell the parents to "parent" and tell their daughter not to get pregnant!

Actually these things do exist out in higher ranked areas too. The Shady Grove red line is close to W schools so there are parents who drive 5-10 minutes and then take the metro. There are farmers markets all over. Many areas that feed into RM are walkable -Fallsgrove, RTC and there are tons of farmers markets. Wootton is getting an area with Trader Joe's, restaurants etc off Travilah RD. Churchill has Park Potomac and the Village. QO has Lakelands and the Kentlands.

Try getting around on public transportation if you live off Travilah Road, in Park Potomac or Potomac Village, or Lakelands or Kentlands. Can it be done? Yes, if you don't mind spending a lot of time on the bus/waiting for buses, and staying home on Sundays. They're not easy places for a one-car family, though - let alone a no-car family.

Yes, you can have good public transportation, a walkable community, and a wealthy/white school if you have enough money to live near downtown Bethesda. But most of us don't.
