Teachers: What gifts do you throw away?

Really? All my in-laws – SIL, FIL, MIL - are/were teachers and they love ornaments. I should clarify they don't want homemade ones but the ones that say "I love my teacher" or something like that. They have had some of those on their tree for 40 years from kids back in the day.

My Jewish Mom was probably one of Goodwill's biggest donors of ornaments! Not that she did not appreciate the thought.

did you read the thread? pretty much all the teachers said they hate candles.

I'm a teacher and I love candles. I didn't get any this year, but I love it when I do.

A hard bound copy of good children's literature.

Nordstrom had this soft infinity scarves with a fringe on sale for $10/each, so I gave that and $25 gift cert to the teacher. They can return the scarf, but its a neutral red color and scarves fit everyone (it is a winter scarf, not a stole). I hope that was okay.

Of course it is okay. She is likely to regift the scarf if she doesn't like it. As long as you are okay with someone not using your gift, then anything is okay. That is the point of this whole thread. The only thing nobody throws away is gifted card. All other things they may give away or donate.

Cash, I always give cash. There isn't a person on this planet who can't use cash.

I am a teacher and a mom of 2 school age kids. I love notes and handwritten cards, so I have my children do those at the end of the year. Gift cards to anywhere are great. I love chocolates and like stashing them in my desk or car for a pick-me-up. My two kids have about 20 teachers/therapists/bus drivers/aids between them, so we cannot afford to dole out gift cards to everyone. This year, my oldest and I hand painted designs on mason jars and filled them with an assortment of chocolates and candies. The jars were 50 cents each, so no biggie if they are tossed. Candy can be enjoyed by the receiver or shared. To me, it's the thought that counts and my children are enjoying brightening the day for the adults who wouldn't have gotten something if we spent $$ on gift cards for just their main teachers (the aid on one of the buses was clearly not used to getting anything and was extremely appreciate of our gesture).

My mom (a teacher) always said the best gift you can give a teacher is a crisp $50 bill. So I give one to the main teacher and one to the Aide with a sweet note. I feel weird and tacky doing so, but they have always liked it!

It's more than okay. Believe me. It sounds like a lovely gift.

Teachers spouse here. Starbucks cards and good chocolates are fine with me ?. The best was a $50 Bloomingdales card. Amazon card would also be good. but I would think cash was tacky.....
