How exactly was this horrible? Life has consequences. Don't act like an a-hole if you don't want people to know you're an a-hole - you never know when a camera is recording.

Because they are minors and not adults and their identies should be shielded to protect their privacy. They took candy and did not commit a robbery, even if they had because they are minors, law enforcement would not have disclosed their identities or images.

Privacy? It no longer exists. Get over it.

Or would it be better for the homeowner to call the cops and let them deal with the perp?

It would be better to let some things go from time to time. Not everything is evidence of the decline of morality and ethics. Sometimes kids do dumb and/or destructive things. That doesn't make it right, but it is part of growing up.

I should be able to leave a danged pumpkin on my doorstep overnight w/o some kid smashing it.

No one is saying that the kids who do these things are horrible little monsters. But turning a blind eye to bad behavior isn't a kindness. It isn't doing those kids any favor.

Protect their identities from what? They aren't getting in trouble with the law. Just a little public shaming for their bad choices. Might be a good life lesson in there.

Because it's unfair that some kids get all the candy and others get none, just because some kids are greedy.

They got none of the candy in that bowl but I am pretty sure they got some candy and missing the one or two pieces in this bowl is not ruining Halloween for them.

This isn't a new thing. It's not a major criminal enterprise that needs to be prosecuted but It wasn't ok back then and it still isn't ok now.

For every adult who bellies up to candy dishes and dumps the whole thing into their bag or purse (yes in my federal office there are people who think this is ok- year round, not just at H'ween) there was an uncorrected child who grew up.

Normalizing theft (and that's what it was because if you don't leave some for others you are saying you 'thought' the whole bowl was meant for you-? I don't think so. And suggesting a sign dictating the amount shouldn't have to be done unless a child is special needs) is never cool.
