Are we crazy to turn down a "Big Three" for Potomac?

YEAH! Congrats on following your gut and do what YOU think its best for your DC and family, and filtering out all the noise.

We did exactly the same today (Potomac deadline for deposit was today at noon, for those that may be asking). It wasn't an easy decision but the correct decision for us.

It's nice to know there will be other level headed families joining us at Potomac. DC is entering 9th grade.

You must be one of the Potomac WL family.... I understand you may be disappointed of one less chance for your DC, but no need to be nasty!

Anonymous wrote:News flash...all of the DC prep schools are second and in some regards third tier prep schools....there are no Horace Manns, no Exeters and no Riverdale Country days....the only reason Sidwell is mentioned up here so much is because the presidents kids go there...and it's still not one of the best in the country and once he is out of office there will be some other school that's considered the big 3.......Potomic is a fine school and I think it's better then the others anyway

Yes, but those schools aren't available to those of us who actually want to live with our kids, and whose kids want to live with their parents.

Have taught at well-regarded boarding and day. Boarding schools idyllic, but the education and student bodies are as good at the top day schools in Boston, DC, NY, LA, to name a few cities with very good independent schools. Even the top boarding schools stretch a bit in admissions for full paying, legacy, athletes, etc. And DC's best schools very comparable with NYC and Boston.

This poster is exactly the reason why we turned down TWO big three schools for Potomac. Comparable curriculum, comparable college placement, but fewer mean girls and better social interactions. And you diminish opinionated assholes like this who live through their children to boost their own self-esteem so they can brag at cocktail parties.

Congratulations, OP. Glad to hear that you found a school that was a good fit for your child and your family!

Congratulations, OP! Great school, and it sounds like you made your decision for the right reasons!

I disagree. The previous comment he/she was responding was mean and innapropiate. I understant where PP is coming from.

We accepted yesterday too!

We could not be more thrilled with our choice. Like you, we had options.

We just thought the well rounded balance at the school was such a positive (and, of course, all that outdoor space for learning).

'See' you in the Fall!

My family turned down a Big 3 for Big 5. It happens.
