Well, ward 4 is Muriel's ward--at least you're seeing plow trucks, we got nothing.

I'm in Ward 4 as well, as is our charter. The drive at 8:15 was mostly unplowed, and very slippery.

As a council member, Bowser wasn't exactly on top of things in her ward, either. While she won her home ward in the mayor's race there margin certainly wasn't overwhelming.

I fed my DD some salted whale meat and lashed her school books to her body with cat gut and pushed her out into the darkness this morning what's wrong with you people

why do people WANT a delay? If your roads are bad, bring your kid in two hours late.

For those of us with plowed roads, we appreciate schools being open and our kids' schedule not being disrupted. Remember, there are low income parents in this city for whom a two hour delay = lost income and/or being written up at work for being late.

Who in DC had plowed roads by the time school opened today?

DCPS' primary purpose is to educate the city's public school children. I don't discount the importance of a free breakfast for some, but neither than nor child care is a reason to put all the teachers and kids of DCPS at risk. Bowser and her buddy Kaya screwed up, big time!

If you bring them in late DC now counts them as absent, at least in high school that's the case

Because our child may be penalized if they don't make every effort to be there when walkable classmates are on time -- the 1 or 2 hour delay keeps everyone on the same beat. My older son goes to Wilson and only 5 out of more than 20 kids arrived on time to take a long anticipated quiz. Fine to open on time but only if the routes were tended to--they were utterly ignored. Bowser is an amateur and this lack of common sense and engagement with DCPS is a total fail. I bet half the parents on DCUM would have figured out this was an event to see rolled out perfectly, the. I keep seeing their smug mugs on Meet The Press and I'm not surprised.

If you kid is counted as tardy/absent whatever on the very few days that DCPS opens on time rather than delaying then . . . nothing. Now, if this is your kid's 5th tardy because he overslept the other four, then, yes, problem. It is like my college students who skip classes 5 times, have a very legitimate excuse for the 6th tardy, and complain about loosing a letter grade for missing 6 classes. Had you just missed class the one time you had a legitimate excuse, no problem.

Our drive to school was fine, a little slow but fine.

Lovely.... Most of the WMATA buses are not running right now, and the ones that are running are on a very sparse schedule. How are kids supposed to get home?

How? Are we now expecting all parents to get on the road in cars they may or may not own?

A no win situation.

But there was poor preparation on the city's part.

In addition, people need to be prepared and as flexible as they can be (and I understand that this is not 100% possible - hey, I was expected to be at work in VA on time this morning). If you need to bring your kids in late, go ahead. (One or two tardies because of weather is fine). Get snow tires (they seriously helped me this morning). Support your neighborhood school (super glad we decided to stay - for many reasons it keeps me sane).

+1000

I agree. It is not so easy just to keep your kids home or to come in late as some suggest especially in middle and high school because often there are quizzes and tests and a lot of content that will have to be made up. Therefore, it is not so easy just to miss or be late as some say. If DCPS is so worried about all of the disadvantaged kids (of whom many were absent today) missing meals, then close the school for official classes and open it for babysitting and enrichment only.

Thank you, Bowser and Kaya, for helping my DC learn today at our neighborhood public school. We had no trouble walking 4-5 blocks.
