What bathroom renos done today will stand the style test of time? How about mine?

What exactly do you mean by patterned subway tile? Something like this?

I think it's possible to use marble in a more contemporary way although the room's other elements (e.g. the sinks in the pic below) will have a strong impact on how timeless the look is. I would argue that even the marble bathroom above is less than timeless due to the cabinetry, which looks more early 2000s than 2014.

The other marble bathroom was just awful...I agree that it looks like a Donald Trump creation or a bathroom of a Saudi Prince. The two pps hit the nail on the head.

But this is beautiful, tasteful, understated and well done. And I hate contemporary.

Just bought a home with brown blob travertine bathrooms. Don't like them but it just means I'll renovate in the next couple of years. It's just a bathroom people.

I actually thought the discussion was pretty tame for DCUM...

Just came across this subway/marble combo, which may be one of my favorite bathrooms of all time:

Oh - I love most everything about that one. Personally I'd probably skip the marble subway tile though - too much.

I had no idea that people were so persnickety about bathrooms - and that my taste is so different than a lot of people's on this board.

Subway tile with contrasting grout has a very tailored, almost masculine kind of look. I think that's one of the reasons it works well in the bathroom above. It's offset nicely by the soft gray swirls in the marble, the glass knobs, and other, more feminine aspects of the room. The result is more balanced and not as frou-frou looking as the Saudi prince bathroom posted earlier.
