Is it possible to totally skip a Disney vacation?

I can't believe the extreme reactions on this topic.

I've traveled and lived in many different countries. I want my kids to experience many of them, as well as things across the US and locally.

My kids are 8 and 6 and we are going to Orlando and Disneyworld this summer for a week. The kids are beyond excited. We went once before when they were 4 and 2 and they remember only small snippets of it, but mainly because DH and I had never been. We had a fabulous time as a family, and that is the POINT of a vacation, remember. We enjoyed it, and took it for what it was--a theme park, and pool/resort vacation that is geared toward families.

We're never going to be an every year Disney family, and we probably won't even go again after this because the kids will age out of it and I want to go to other things with them as they get older (national parks, international travel, etc.)

All vacations are a bit artificial in some ways, because they are about living in a way you don't normally live for a week or two. Just relax, people, and feel blessed that you even have choices like where to go on vacation.

Great post. Also, beach resorts are not fun for all. Once you are at Disney, it is relaxing--no planning involved. Just go with the flow.

we have visited 49 states; many memorable experiences. Disney seems such a waste of time.

Same here! My kids have been to Disney twice. They're the same age as your kids and they have no desire to go back. That's fine with me.

Once, I get. Every year? No thank you. Way better vacations to be had. My brother in law and his wife go to Disney several times a year - sometimes without their kids! It's just weird when adults are that into it.

I don't either--but isn't it wonderful that we all have different likes and dislikes. I hate rides. Some people love them. That's great. I wish I weren't scared to do it.

p.s. We did take our kids to Disney twice. We had a wonderful time--but I watched them ride with my husband. I love people watching.

really? all 49 of those trips were better than a trip to Florida/ Disney?? No way. If you go to 49 states and skip Disney, you are not showing them what is clearly one of the coolest kid experiences and best trips ever. Unless your idea of fun is rock colelcting or something???

You can skip Disney (until they ask, which they will eventually) but why would you want to? Most parents I know find it to be one of the most relaxing vacations they ever take, much to their surprise. The hotels are fantastic and have great amenities for the money. Every person who works at Disney is polite and friendly and helpful. everything is clean and easy. There are very good restaurants at the hotels and Epcot. Great shows and low-key activities if you want them (we went to a camp fire one night). Stay at a disney property and they have staff who play games with the kids at the pool every afternoon (hello, reading time!), free hotel transfers and luggage delivery. The rides are designed so that adults can fit on all of them comfortably; no watching the kids ride all day or squeezing into tiny seats. And the rides are really cool and creative. Consider that it's not as popular as it is simply because they market well; it's popular because it's an easy family vacation and everyone really does have a nice time.

We are going to take our kids, 6 and 3, in November. DD has been asking since a friend of hers went, and we figured, why the heck not? I wanted to go so badly when I was little, didn't make it until I was going to grad school at 23 and stopped there on the way to Ohio so I could finally see it.

I don't want her to grow up like me, wishing she had seen it. If we can afford it, there's no reason not to, even DH who was always adamant he would never do it is now on board.

We take them on other vacations abroad and to Puerto Rico, and they enjoy those too.
