Why are the kids/families extorted into bringing in gifts?

Isn't their gift their weekly paychecks and/or every holiday off including the entire summer?

Enough already.

Uh oh. Look like someone's DC didn't get into AAP.

Haycock troll rears her ugly mug again.

I just want to say this last quote just shows that some are out to give Haycock a bad name. There is nothing in the above post that suggests the PP is associated with Haycock.

Didn't we just get extorted for monies for teacher's week?

Now they need money for end of the year gift cards?

When does the madness stop?

Haycock parents on this thread AER douchey.

When this happens I always wonder, did the persom tkaing the money give ALL og it, or keep a little for themselves? At our school, these donations can easily top $200 per parent. I stopped with the group gifts. Not everyone participates.

I was fine with the amount, but the gift was a very taste specific gift that I wasn't sure the teacher would really like. I thought about doing my own gift, but I contributed because I didn't want DC to feel left out when the teacher got the gift and all the friends said it was from them. I wish room parents would stick to gift cards from places teachers could find either supplies or something personal (e.g. target). I just think spending $300 on a gift that depends on the person's taste is a little odd. I didn't know the room parent well enough to say anything and I was worried about offending her. Anyway, sometimes it's not giving to the teacher that people object to, sometimes it's what is suggested as a gift.

+1. I thought the gift was tacky and would have put in straight into the trash. Hand painted by one of the "artistic" moms. The $300 was for the "special art supplies."

The people who complain the most about the PTA are invariably the least educated about what they do. There is no mandate that all PTAs hold over-the-top teacher appreciation weeks--it's all up to the parents who put in the time. (And please, no "But I work all day" comments--our PTA board is almost entirely FT working parents.)

Oh, please. The PTA club is run by the pushiest people. They are not looking for suggestions. Just worker bees.

I'll start going to PTA meetings when the teachers actually go.

I remember a project that the queen bees came up with for Teacher Appreciation week--then the queen bees ducked out and left the worker bees to do the project. They were all too busy......

This is from our team room mother.

"We collected $ at beginning of year to cover several holiday gift, teacher appreciation, etc. We have $140 left for the teacher's end of the year gift. Please contribute $5-10 in the next week if possible."

WTF?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is an Arlington PUBLIC school...a $140 gift certificate from the class is not enough?!?!!? How are they even legally obligated to accept that? I'm a Fed and we can't accept more than $20 lunch, etc.

Because they aren't federal employees governed by the federal ethics regs. I think $140 is very generous. OTOH, if its a gift from the whole class (say 25 kids), that is a contribution of around 6.00 per kid for the gift, which is not over the top in any way.

But they are soliciting heavily this week for us to throw in more....you missed that we put in a big chunk at the beginning of the year for Xmas gifts, teacher appreciation, her birthday, etc. etc...this is why we are now at $140 which is a nice EOY certificate..why do we need MORE, MORE MORE $?

teachers are public servants as well, btw. This is a public school, not a private school...and our teachers make close to 6-figures.

Many of ours do, and our principal and VPs are always there. Also, the PTA board is totally welcoming of new ideas. A few parents approached the board about forming some cool clubs this year, and the board was happy to put some money behind it with no input otherwise.

I'm sorry so many of you have Mean Girls PTAs, but I hope others realize they are not all that way.

Wow. Maybe I should think of switching out of Fairfax. 20 years and a MA, and I'm not close to 6 figures.
